Riff Police! Pull Over! #89: Hazzerd Vs Avenged Sevenfold!

Formed in Huntington Beach California in 1999, it was 2003 that saw Avenged Sevenfold rise to prominence with their critically acclaimed Hopeless Records sophomore album “Waking The Fallen“. Single “Unholy Confessions”  was the first song by the band to crack the mainstream and was heavily rotated on MTV2’s Headbangers Ball, which was at the time huge for any band. Having already appeared in this feature when we heard it’s familiar riff in “Make Believe” by Nepalese Metalcore act Underside, it’s not going to surprise you that we heard that same riff used by someone else and lightning does indeed strike twice. Now of all the places that you might expect to hear and a riff like the one in “Unholy Confessions“, you might not expect to hear it on a track by a Canadian Thrash act. But the universal appeal of Avenged Sevenfold and their mainstream presence made them hard to avoid. When listening to “Delirium” by Hazzerd, the riff sticks out like a sore thumb on “Waking Nightmare“. Check it out for yourselves…
