Review: “Diffraction Matters” by Breeding Chaos
Self describing their sound as “Melodic brutality that smells upcoming Death“, French Death Metal project Breeding Chaos was given life in the great plague years as two old friends started composing music and mixing ideas using Guitar Pro. Having settled on an overarching sound that blended brutality, complexity and gloomy atmospheres, they went in search of a drummer and bassist. A quest completed by the end of 2022, it allowed them time to pour blood, sweat and tears into rehearsals before recording their debut EP in February of 2023. About a month after came their first live show at the Hôtel de la Musique in Marseille which was critically acclaimed by the Metal Underground and opened the door for an appearance at Melting Point Festival..
…the first few seconds of title track “Diffraction Matters” exposes exactly why the quartet have been praised so early on in their fledgling career with a raw and abrasive guitar tone giving their debut a demo like feel despite the obvious mixing and mastering given the well balanced bass and drum sound. Groove laden, the bass line pops in bombastic style between some of the stuccato riff breaks while the vocals are enough to unsettle those of weaker minds and bodies. A statement piece that isn’t to be outdone but matched by those that follow it, the title track paves the way for “Falls The Shadow” to continue the flow with a restless and relentless kit performance and early 90’s Death Metal stylings that add a real nostalgic quality to it. All that’s missing is a scorching whammy bar drop solo to raise the hairs on the back of the neck. In a curious left turn “Darkness Divine” is introduced by 50 seconds of beautiful piano with a 1920’s Jazz feel to it before the violence begins once more. Having a more theatric flare to it, Breeding Chaos throw in a few timely lead parts to enhance the sinister atmosphere but the raspy death growled vocals remain unyeilding. Continuing in the same vein, the dramatic storm of “A World In Flames” has at its beating black heart a tasteful solo with the cries of “All I see is dark!” ringing in the ears. The jackhammer footwork and overall drum sound feels oddly reminiscent of Pissing Razors however there is no mistaking the heavier band. A solid start, this bodes very well for a future of uncompromising quality… [7/10]
