Review: “Trust” by Voidchaser
Split between the cities of Montreal and Stockholm, Progressive Metal quartet Voidchaser have made a name for themselves by creating concept driven works of epic grandeur in the Science Fiction realm. Continuing the story established in their 2024 EP “Odyssey” and its follow up album “Solace“, both of which have received critical acclaim, “Trust” takes the discerning listener on a profound journey through despair, memory, trauma and redemption. Their protagonist is found lost in the void of space, isolated and facing certain death, giving the band the opportunity to collaborate with more than fifteen musicians from around the globe as they explore themes of loss, the fleeting nature of life, survival against impossible odds, betrayal, fragile faith and the hope of redemption…
A final chapter in the conceptual saga Voidchaser have created, “Trust” is an unholy trinity of tracks that provides us with twenty minutes of new music. Spellbinding synths are enchanting as “Time” soars with a rich melody, the aching beauty enhanced by clean vocals and mesmerising percussive battery. An illusion shattered into a million pieces by brutal unclean vocal passages offering depth and texture while providing the necessary emotive quality to paint the harrowing picture held within the lyrical narrative. A melodic guitar solo is followed by a lush chorus and then a stunning keyboard solo as our protagonist receives the warning that the oxygen levels are critically low. After that seven and a half minute magnum opus, a nine minute one in “Dogma” is a surprising follow up. Heavier, more bombastic riffs come into play as Bernatchez and Montbriand deliver a symphony of destruction with an array of guest musicians adding violin, viola, cello, saxophone, oud and bansuri parts. A dreamy mid section is hauntingly beautiful after the power of the opening foray is wonderous before building back up to a crescendo of stunning guitar solos and a dance macabre in strings. At points this borders on theatre, the epic grandeur of the undertaking a joy to behold. Jim Grey of Caligula’s Horse then lends his throat for title track “Trust“, the contrast of his fierce uncleans against those from Bernatchez working incredibly well in a whirlwind of percussion and electrifying riffs. Shorter, sharper and with a glorious sing-a-long finale, this one gives us a final flourish in an unexpected way. These three pieces are wonderfully diverse any yet have great continuity, every instrument playing a part in creating a vivid picture and the only issue with it is that you can’t help but crave more [8.5/10]
