5 Albums I Want To Be Buried With #27: Whipworm!

In the aftermath of reviewing the new Whipworm album “Death Beyond“, a concept album that tells the story of “A mysterious letter from an impossible source sends a man on a journey through time, facing unimaginable horrors on his quest to usurp the very throne of Death himself” we got talking to multi instrumentalist and vocalist Travis Weinand (Tetsuo, Burden, Muffin, Titan). How we managed to convince him to give us 5 albums he wanted to listen to for all eternity in the afterlife, we’ll never know but we did and so the conversation went something like this…

The premise is simple: “Back in ancient Egypt they believed that the items their Kings were buried with would travel with them into the afterlife and so part of the burial ritual would see the mummified bodies surrounded by chariots, gold and more. Fast forward to now. If there were five albums that you’d want buried in the coffin with you to take to the afterlife, what would you choose?

1. Opeth – “Ghost Reveries

I know this one isn’t most people’s favorite Opeth album, but I think it is just absolute perfection. To me, it is the most impressive blend of all of the things that make Opeth so incredible. The death metal and the prog elements work so beautifully together here. Some of their most haunting and moving material to date. It has been an integral, and ever inspirational record for me ever since. It’s an album about death, so it seems fitting to bring such a gorgeous and melancholic soundtrack to the afterlife.

2. Blind Guardian – “Somewhere Far Beyond

Blind Guardian… What can I say that hasn’t been said about arguably the greatest epic power metal band of all time? There isn’t a bad record, not a bad song. It’s all amazing. But 1992’s Somewhere Far Beyond is the one that really hits me. An album full of songs about Lord of The Rings, and Stephen King’s The Dark Tower? Sign me up. It starts off with an absolute banger “Time What Is Time” and delivers iconic song after iconic song until the last note. I went to their recent tour where they played the whole album front to back, and I was in heaven. This band has been around since the same year I was born (1984) and they sound as good as ever.

3. Faith No More – “Angel Dust

As impossible as it is to choose a favorite FNM album, I would have to give it to Angel Dust. I still remember listening to this when it first came out (also 1992) and being absolutely blown away by their progression from The Real Thing. It didn’t even sound like the same band, but I loved it. They let Mike Patton loose, and it resulted in some of the most influential music in the history of hard rock and metal. Every damn song is so good. To this day, it still sounds ahead of its time. Perfect album.”

4. Meshuggah – “Obzen

A band that has no equal. No rival. None are even close. Meshuggah basically created a genre, perfected it, and has reigned supreme for 30+ years. 2008’s ObZen is the one that perfectly exemplifies what they are about. Uncompromising, unwavering, organic-mechanic rhythmic wizardry. The 1-2-3 punch of Bleed into Lethargica (the riff at 3:00 may be the heaviest goddamn thing ever written) into Obzen is about as punishing as anything I have ever heard. The impact this band has had on me as a musician is impossible to quantify.

5. Frank Zappa – “Apostrophe

Zappa is just… Zappa. Either you love him or hate him. 1974’s Apostrophe(‘) was my first introduction to his music when I was maybe 7 or 8. My dad is a lifelong fan of his, and he figured showing me his more comical and commercial-friendly stuff would be a better way to get me on board. He was right, and I am also now a lifelong fan. How can you not appreciate this mad genius? Every song on this album is brilliant. The musicianship is just next level (the drumming on St. Alfonzo’s Pancake Breakfast and Father O’Blivion is sublime) I’m not sure if the younger generations are getting the message that Frank is God-tier music, but I know I’m doing my part for my son. Every song on Apostrophe(‘) is a masterpiece, and it’s the perfect album to get people into the wonderful world of Zappa.

Death Beyond” by Whipworm is out 16th March 2026 and is available over at bandcamp
