Review: “Self Titled” by Ancient Fury

When mastermind Dario Beretta (Drakkar, Crimson Dawn) wanted to create a new International Doom influenced Traditional Heavy Metal supergroup, he didn’t need to look very far for recruits. Having previously collaborated with Justin Biggs (Sorcerer), Edo Sala (Folkstone) and Melissa Pinion (Stygian Crown), on various charitable recording projects, getting them in board was a piece of metaphorical cake. Add to that Arkadius Kurek (Wheel) whom Pinion met while performing together at the 2022 “Hammer of Doom” festival in Germany and felt would be the perfect choice to join her on vocals and you’ve got yourself a dream team on paper at least. Influences for an Old School sound in the vein of both classic and contemporary traditional heavy metal have been cited in Dio, Cirith Ungol and Grand Magus, so what do Ancient Fury sound like?

On first listen this self titled 7″ comprising two tracks feels very much like the tip of the iceberg, a promo put together to send out in seeking label opportunities for a full length debut album along similar lines. That’s why rather than a rough demo this is a polished final article from a collection of seasoned musicians who have clearly had a great deal of fun putting it together. The self titled track “Ancient Fury” is an absolute statement piece of the highest order, setting the tone for what could be an impressive discography should things go the bands way. The contrast between the vocals of Pinion and Kurek is sublime, the balance perfectly weighted as they interweave in rich melody. As you might expect the old school riffs sound distinctively like they were recorded in the late 70’s or early 80’s, the virtuoso soloing and storytelling style very much in keeping with that golden era. Lyrically there are tinges of the roots of Power Metal with the Medieval tale of swords, shields and legacy and it has to be said it’s all very tastefully done. After the pomp and circumstance of the opening cut “Trail of the Fiend” is a shade darker, the intertwining vocal moments as stunning as the flamboyant soloing. There can be no doubt about the potential this band has and given the right backing they will be able to build the telephone box from Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure to take us back to the time of Ancient Fury and glory on the battlefield [8/10]
