Review: “The Resurgence Of Nostalgia” by DeathTrophy
Mixed and mastered by Rob Caldwell (Cannibal Corpse, Municipal Waste, Belphegor) the first burnt offering from Knoxville, Tennessee two piece Deathcore purveyors DeathTrophy has long been described as something to crawl from the grave. Inspired by the duo’s equal love for horror movies and brutal riffs, their abrasive sound is said to take insanity to a new level of depravity, taking what we know of their chosen genre down a much darker path…
From a hospital bed, patient zero flips the channels on a tube TV set before a voice from the void calls to take his soul, the heartrate monitor flatlining as the brutal crushing power of “Ash” takes hold. A barrage of Downtempo riffage and blood gargling vocals are wrapped around that haunting female voice from another realm of existence, sending a chill down the spine. Thunderous percussive battery and down tuned chugs then light up “Geist” like Wicker Man on bonfire night, the throat splitting savagery showing no sign of letting up and the bass rubbles underneath it like an earthquake tremor. You can sense that something wicked this way comes but gripped by fear and unable to move, you simply endure the white hot intensity of it all as it burns the ear canals. Scream is revisited as Sydney answers the phone in “Shroud“, the classic lines from the film used to create samples to bolster the dark atmosphere as the riffs reverberate off the walls. A violently turbulent thrill ride from start to finish, it’s exactly what the edge of the seat was made for. Groovier riffs give “Coffin” a different kind of vibe, the thick gauged strings played by calloused hands inflicting maximum damage alongside the Slamming vocals. Eerie synths and a brutal slowdown complete the track in style with bands like Old Wharf springing to mind as DeathTrophy decimate the weak and thin the herd. “Flesh” finds the duo bringing a chainsaw to the party, cleaving flesh from bone with their dark and brooding observations. Anvil heavy, creepy and nostalgic this is a vicious little ditty that you can use to scare the neighbours because its not one for the faint of heart or weak of mind [7/10]
