Exclusive Interview: Incriya talk “Nothingness”!

Who are Incriyra? In their own words: “Incriya is a Finnish metal band formed in 2021. Their music portrays a broad spectrum of colors, where deep contrasts are knit together. Combining heavier elements of modern progressive metal and djent with intriguing grooves and beautiful atmospheres gives their sound a unique flavor. Though their sound has absorbed characteristics of various genres, the roots of their music still lie firmly in metal. Incriya’s first EP, Nothingness, was released in early 2022” and let us tell you that it’s a very impressive record indeed as we don’t give 8/10 reviews for just any old music. We had the pleasure of a pair of conversations with Joonas from Incriya and the first went something like this…

It seems likes it has been a whirlwind 12 months for you, forming the band and releasing the debut EP “Nothingness”? Did you find that the whole Global situation meant that it was simpler to focus on writing and recording the EP and not get distracted by the desire to play live shows? “In a sense, yes, the global situation did help the writing and production process. We all had less gigs and projects, because of all the restrictions, and we simply just had more time and energy for the composition and production process, which can be quite time consuming”

To our ears the EP sounds incredibly polished and mature for a debut release. How have you found the reaction to it so far? “I’m glad to hear if the EP made such an impression! It’s always great to hear that the hours spent working with the music were not in vain. Since we only just released the debut, it hasn’t spread to as many ears yet, but the feedback that we’ve received thus far has been great!”

What is the story behind the cover artwork for the EP? The geometrical shapes against dark fluid background gives the feeling of order on chaos? “You couldn’t have said it better, it’s great to hear that the idea was conveyed! Here is the quote from our description to the BreathingTheCore mag: “Instead of photo manipulation, we wanted the album cover to be hand-drawn. We found an artist that had created some really nice and unique textures in her work, so in terms of appearance and style, we let the illustrator work quite freely. Our initial idea for the cover art was that it would portray the contrasts of the music. At the center, we wanted a geometrical symbol as the focal point to represent clarity and order, and loose textures in the background to convey a feeling of disorder. “Order in chaos”, so to speak.”

The Metal scene in Finland is huge right now with labels like Inverse Records doing a lot to spread the word. How has the scene in your homeland helped and inspired you to this point? “I guess the metal scene in Finland on average seems to be pretty huge, but we’ve actually found that the modern metal scene itself seems not to be that active or wide spread, or at least it’s doing a good job on hiding from us! Therefore our influences and such mainly come from abroad. Though, we would love to co-operate with other modern metal bands in Finland by doing live shows together!”

There are no guest appearances on “Nothingness” so if you could bring someone into the studio to work on a new track with you, who would you like to work with and why? “For me at least, if I could drag and lock up anyone I wanted in the studio with me, it would be interesting to work with some of the greatest modern prog producers/musicians, like Getgood, Abasi or Kahney”

What’s next for Incriya? “We’re actually working on some interesting new music at the moment! Besides that, we’re also preparing for the future liveshows and making some new content to our Youtube channel.  So stay tuned for that!”

Nothingness” by Incriya is out now and available over at bandcamp.
