Review: “Where Nothing Remains” by Coiled Around Thy Spine
Someone once said the best things in life come to those who wait, arguably meaning that the journey is just as important as the destination and like a fine wine, things can take time to develop. Patience is after all a virtue and with that in mind with have impatiently waited years between releases from American-Italian Melodic Death Metal band Coiled Around Thy Spine. Three years between debut album “Shades” and it’s follow upĀ “From The Ashes” and then another three to twin track single “Soul Symmetry“. Some may have feared that another one thousand and ninety six days would pass before their next burnt offering, but the band have instead offered up another twin track affair in “Where Nothing Remains” just three months on, comprising ten and a half minutes of new music…
At the heavier end of Melodic Death Metal, reaching into the void of Death Metal is where you will find Coiled Around Thy Spine with “Where Nothing Remains“, the Scandinavian roots of their sound very much bleeding through the bandages here. Blending an electrically paced rhythmic dynamic with bursts of blast beats during the verse and then bridging the gap between the crushing riff passages with melodic leads is where they are at, their unclean vocals harsh enough to give them a ruthless sound while still being fully comprehendible. An intense cut with a real vim and vigour about it, this cut is firm reminder as to why the bands previous material is so damn good. The second cut is a rerecording of “Dissected” from the bands 2018 album “Shades” that clocks in at just two seconds longer than the original. Inspired by bands like Morbid Angel this rendition has been brought kicking and screaming into 2025 and doesn’t sound out of place next to the new cut for even a second. For those who don’t know the tune, it redecorates the morgue with bursts of blast beats and chugged Death Thrash riffs, melodic bridges in lead guitars adding a touch of sinister vibrancy. The staccato almost breakdown in the mid section is one you want to continue for longer but instead a slick transition into a ripper of a solo before cutting back is the order of the day, both elements masterfully done with a deeply satisfying guitar tone. What can we say? Like an addict with a craving we need more! [8/10]
