Review: “Chop The Cop” by Korrupto
Hoping in our iconic modified DeLorean DMC-12 with eccentric inventor Doc Brown, we head back a to 2023 while humming “War Pigs” by Black Sabbath to check out the birthing of a giant. Kicking and screaming from their very inception, Korrupto are a trio of arch criminals known for their prior convictions in bands like Faith and Hate, Black Skies Burn, Public Execution, Of Corpse and Seidrblot to name but a few. If those names don’t mean all that much to you, vocalist and guitarist Carlos “Visy Bloodaxe” Murillo, bassist and vocalist Simon “Worm” Manion and drummer Steve Butler are musicians who specialise in creating a sonic cocktail of Death Metal and Grindcore fit for a King. Recorded and mixed by Steve “Geezer” Watkins (Desert Storm, Indica Blues, Pain Control) at Wormwood Studios their debut record is one they describe as anti-establishment noise…
Steve “Geezer” Watkins is as powerful as a drum machine stuck in overdrive, causing the ground to rumble underneath our feet as he hammers through opening cut “The Biggest Of All Cunts” in a fast, loose and volatile way as if auditioning for the position in Vast Slug. He provides the artillery shelling as Murillo roars through the lyric sheet like a man possessed, the unruly assault on the senses still managing to have a surprising amount of verve and swagger about it. Remember Michael Madsen’s torture scene in Quinten Tarantino’s Reservoir Dogs? Imagine that with Amazon owner Jeff Bezos tied to the chair and you have “Prime Bellend“. A blood spitting, venomous tirade about the oligarchs who have far to much influence in the World. A sinister piece of lead around the mid section adds to the blunt force trauma of the chugged guitars and you know there is more blasting here than in a rare earth minerals mine in deepest, darkest China. A fleeting sample adds momentary respite before the rampaging Death Punk of title track “Chop The Cop“, a scream-a-long affair with all the sonic brutality of a building site wrecking ball in full swing.
You want more? You’ve got it. “Someone Smoked It” puts the pedal to the Metal and flies out of hells gate like the Dukes of Hazzard running from the law with a trunk full of moonshine. As sonically abrasive as anything in the Brendan Auld collection and vocally just as vicious, there is still time for an almost Traditional Heavy Metal mid section that offers a glimmer of variety and a spice that’s nice. That allows for the more expansive bass line underpinning to the news reel style sample at the beginning of “Holy Predator” as those children who pray become prey. After the Sludge infused Doom Metal comes the punch of some early Soulfly rumble, the scream of “an eye for an eye!” during the tornado of a finale a gloriously violent delight. Rolling into Twitch Of The Death Nerve territory like a tank crossing enemy lines “Weedgasm” punches hard, the howling guitars and spluttering cough making it as hilarious as a low budget horror film. Once more with feeling? “Korrupto Puto” completes the collection like an armed felon hiding in the shadow of intent. Flirting with the filthy end of Death Metal, the trio manage to produce a head nodder of a tune that is actually for the most part a mid tempo bruiser. All in all a mighty fine introduction for an unsuspecting world to devour [7.5/10]
