Review: “As Time Awaits” by Unburier

Having conquered stages alongside the likes of Sanguisugabogg, Crypta and Party Cannon, as well as making notable appearances at Bloodstock Open Air and Incineration Festivals in the past three years Unburier have made a name for themselves in the Technical Death Thrash world. A band of mercenaries, known for their prior convictions in Goatgor, Morbikon, Parasitic Entity, Bound in Fear and Pintglass to name but a few, they bring their third EP to the King’s table in “As Time Awaits” with a desire to carry the torch of the classic Death Metal sound into a new dawn. They seek not power and glory but an escape from madness as they question all that they can see, hear and smell in this world…

Inspired by so called Golden Age of Death Metal that was the Florida scene in the 90’s, opening cut “Continuum” finds Unburier baring their teeth with old school riffs as they explore the tension between light, darkness, truth and deception in a world that offers contradiction at every turn. An intense first throw of the dice, this one shimmers like gold in the torchlight of an underground cavern, where all you can hear is the constant dripping of water despite the riches on display. The lyrical narrative is as thought provoking as they come, the pounding rhythms fighting against the desire to question everything we witness with our very eyes with the paranoia of a Vietnam veteran. “Abyssal Uncertainty” then draws influence from existential and cosmic literature with nods to grand masters in the likes of Albert Camus and H. P. Lovecraft with a lyrical narrative that follows a trapped labourer’s descent into madness as he confronts the absurdity of his life and death. A scorching Melodic Death Metal solo adds a moment of vibrancy to the deliciously dark licks, the punchy rhythms flirting with the territory between Revocation and Necorphagist stylings with bursts of blast beats to redecorate the walls in blood. The second and third solos help twist and contort the tale being sharper and more incisive. “Survive the Vermin” the pays homage to sci-fi author Nate Crowley and absurdist philosophy with a lyrical narrative that asks if, when we give ourselves wholly to one purpose, it is worth sacrificing the simplicity of everyday life? Sonically the track is a stunning piece of Technical Death Thrash with even the tinniest of details paid attention to with yet more blistering hooks and barbed riffs. It’s not just sublime but both intoxicating and inspiring, the depth of each piece matching the complexity of the thoughts that created it… [8.5/10]
