Review: “Pillar I: Ashes Of Verdant Collapse” by Fraught

“Mass production and consumption cyclically deplete natural capital and poison vital resources, degrading life itself. Humanity has become a species feeding on its own waste, a civilisation sustained by the poison it produces. Contamination has become the very foundation upon which we stake our future…Ashes of Verdant Collapse is a portrait of human triumph, rendered indistinguishable from total ecological annihilation.” ~ Fraught

Forging an unholy alliance with underground label Apocalyptic Witchcraft, Dublin Blackened Death Metal purveyors Fraught have offered us the gift in the first of an unholy trinity of EPs in “Pillar I: Ashes Of Verdant Collapse“. Recorded at Last Light Studios and mixed and mastered by Shauny Cadogan (Coscradh, Diocletian, Malthusian) it is the work of a band whose members are known for their prior convictions in Coldwar, Mortichnia, Slave Zero and Wound Upon Wound and follows 2023 album “Transfixed On Dying Light“. Rumour has it that the trilogy of EPs will form an obsidian tower of an album although whether that will surface on vinyl as a single entity remains to be seen.

Rising from a wall of feedback “Death Assemblage” finds Fraught at their most ferocious, spitting blood and venom at the world around them as an all consuming rage burns within their hearts. Focused and fierce the cut somehow manages to retain a live energy as blistering riffs fly in all directions while the war drums pound… and yet there is also an melancholic quality to the lead guitars of the final passage that perhaps hints at Scandinavian influences. As the winds of plague consume those who would dare listen, the absence of light and hope in the wake of witnessing the rats feeding on what is left of this world means Fraught only want to bring death.

The Blackened Death Metal continues into “Detritivore” as blast beats and swirling guitars create a toxic atmosphere to match the demonic vocals, pushing into Extreme Metal territory as Fraught ride alongside the grim reaper in the dead of night, the barbed riffs like wire wool on skin. If their intention is to batter a few skulls in then they’ve achieved that with consummate ease as the banshee wails and harrowing screams contrast the hammering percussion with a defiance so dangerous it could explode with the force of a neutron bomb at any given moment [7.5/10]
