Review: “Institute For Mental Decay” by Kaosquad (9th Anniversary)

At some point in 2009 in Blatná Czechia, drummer Aleš (Morous, ex-Grace), vocalist bassist Kozel (Lahar, ex-Sněť, ex-Pyosemia) and vocalist guitarist Víťan (ex-Pyosemia) gathered in a damp, dark basement torture chamber hell of a rehearsal space and began creating the kind of Death Metal inspired Grindcore sounds that make your eyes bleed. In 2013 they presented a split with Behind The Cemetery Wall that offered eleven ripping cuts and four years later returned with four more. Recorded in DIY or DIE fashion that sophomore record is “Institute For Mental Decay“.

A tale from Arkham asylum “Corridors of Misery” is a blistering Thrash Hardcore Punk laced affair with bursts of blast beats to keep you on your toes. The vocals are both savage and unhinged but the soundscape a tasteful amount on 80’s Metallic Hardcore swagger to it, the tempo shifts masterfully done for a band in their relative infancy. Front loaded with the kind of old school riffs that Earache Records signings used to offer “Run on Pills” is masterclass in venom spitting Deathgrind that ensures the band are a constant threat. Restless, relentless and aggressive to the point of turning violent, the fact that this stops on a dime after seventy six seconds is all that prevents it from being a savage beating.

The bass has been brought forward in the mix so its almost a second guitar on the power surge that is “Alkomares“, the depraved vocals and 90’s Tampa Florida Death Metal worship an demonstration of what this trio are capable of. Throwing the baby out with the bathwater “Raid Sirens” feels like an ode to the horrors of war that leans on influences in Napalm Death and Carcass while having more than enough buzz-saw action of its own. Forget the past, it’s time to enter the realm of total annihilation with Kaosquad before they summon forth Sharknados to tear through festival mosh pits [7.5/10]
