Riff Police! Pull Over! #76: Darknet Vs Deftones!

Last week saw the release of the debut full length album from possible Tokyo Japan natives Darknet entitled “Morally Flexible”. Believe it or not, a Japanese band are signed to Hollowed Records from Tampa Bay Florida. Nothing odd about that, right? Well… they’re an anonymous band so they could be from anywhere. But we digress. While we were checking out the album’s Nu-Metalcore vibe that steps away from their Halloween 2016 primarily Deathcore self titled release with a bit of punchy DJent and some depressive atmospherics and electronics in the mix, we stumbled across “Ghost”. The track is one of a few to have very familiar sounding guitar work in it.

Way back in 2001, Sacramento California Alternative Metal heroes Deftones tapped up producer Terry Date for the recording of their third studio album “White Pony”. Frank Delgado and DJ Crook (also in Team Sleep with Chino Moreno) added ambient textures and programming to tracks to create mood and the album not only achieved platinum status a year later with 1.3 million copies sold in the US but also critical acclaim with “Elite” getting nominated for a Grammy award. Fans favorite “Digital Bath” was released as a promotional single and got performed on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno. Thematically, Moreno stated that despite the prettiness of the song, it’s actually about “electrocuting a girl in a bathtub”. Well that girl rose from the grave with Darknet being influenced by the riff. See if you can find it.
