Riff Police! Pull Over! #33: Danzig Vs Stone Temple Pilots!

Having already made his name and his mark with horror punks Misfits, their frontman Danzig went on to create music in a whole other style with his solo project. 1990 saw the arrival of the bands second album “Danzig II: Lucifuge” which saw production from Rick Rubin. One particular song “Snakes of Christ” stood out with it’s classy riffage from Guitarist John Christ who was in the band from 1988 to 2007. Not only did he lay down the riff for the song but he also went on to lay down a solo for “Revival Mode” from Every Time I Die in 2012!

At the height of the Grunge Era, the Stone Temple Pilots brought out single “Sex Type Thing” from their 1992 album “Core” via Atlantic Records. Spot the difference? Dean DeLeo’s guitar work is so similar that even Danzig himself mentions the similarity of the main riff in his song in an October 1997 interview in Seconds Magazine! Controversial? Yes. Legal action? No…
