Documentary: Weaponry “Forever Nothing” Studio Diary Day #1!

It’s a bright and sunny day in mid September at The Ranch Production House near Southampton as Weaponry prepare to record some new material for an EP called “Forever Nothing“. Off brand Monster and Iron Bru are flowing as drummer Tim “Animal” Doyle (he actually has a tattoo of Animal from the Muppets on his shoulder) and Producer Daly George (Creeper, Milk Teeth, Boston Manor) build the drum kit and begin to create the drum sound for the record. If you’ve ever been to a gig when a tech is on the stage and they hit the snare fifteen times and then move onto the bass drum… it’s exactly like that but a hundred times over. As Daly explains, the drum sound needs to be consistent throughout the EP and so marking out the tunings up front means it will remain clean and crisp throughout. In the breakout room guitarist Max Ashworth is noodling riffs on a black and red Ibanez Gio which he will be using in the studio later on in the week. He’s wearing his influences on his sleeves with a Funeral For A Friend t-shirt.

The second part of the day starts with Tim jamming in the recording room while Daly sets up a few things at the mixing desk and in software to get the best drum sound, calling out specific things he wants as and when needed. The attention to detail here is second to none, Daly is a perfectionist which means the band will end up with the best possible product at the end of the studio time. The first track to have the drums laid down is “Take It Or Leave It“, one of the oldest songs in the bands arsenal. As it goes it was the first song they wrote together and have been playing live since 2018, the song that saw Al Bristow put down the guitar and pick up the microphone. Tim Doyle is the third drummer Weaponry have had grace the stool (not counting the drum machine) and each one has made the bands material their own so the song has evolved somewhat since those days.

Next up is “Mine“, one of three brand new cuts that the band have brought to the studio for “Forever Nothing” with Daly George having listened to demos of the whole EP recorded about a month in advance of the recording sessions, knowing that there will be changes to the songs for the finished product. The demos were recorded in the bands rehearsal space on a phone on video before the audio was extracted for better sound quality and while as with any demo the drums are louder than you might expect, but the quality is surprisingly good for a full band single microphone performance. Tim explains that in his mind from a drumming perspective it’s the hardest to play so he feels more comfortable tracking it having warmed up with “Take It Or Leave It“. Despite those seemingly doubtful words he nails the performance using the demo as a reference for both himself and Daly and we can’t wait to hear what the rest of it will sound like…

Max Facts: Max owns 9 guitars of which 2 are in working, playable order…
