Exclusive Interview: 20 Questions with… Marius Krogsgaard Thomsen of Fixed Fight!
When it comes down to it, sometimes the truth is stranger than fiction and lets face it, who actually saw the plot twist in Fight Club before it came to be? Copenhagen Denmark Metallic Hardcore outfit Fixed Fight blew our tiny minds with their recently released sophomore album “Antebellum” and so it is an honour and a privilege to have guitarist and vocalist Marius Krogsgaard Thomsen answer 20 very random questions indeed with us!
1. What’s your poison?
“I’ve been straight edge for ten years, so just coffee for me”
2. What’s your habit?
“Procrastination in general is something I excel at”
3. As a band what was your highlight of 2021?
“Probably making the record. It was amazing to see our hard work come to life”
4. What are you looking forward to most in 2022?
“The release party for sure. We haven’t been on stage in ages, and we’re dying to get back up there”
5. You’ve turned up in a new City and you’ve got 3 hours to kill before you sound check in a venue. How are you spending your time?
“Probably at a bar. I may be straight edge, but the others are decisively not”
6. What does a band get together that doesn’t involve a show or rehearsal look like? Do you go karting, golfing, playing cards or are you enjoying a mutual love of Jazz over single malt whiskey?
“Last time we had a get together, we had dinner and then went to see No Fun at All play. We usually go to concerts together if we’re hanging out”
7. If you had to challenge yourself, which do you think you’d find easier, writing an EP with only words you’d never used before or putting a unique instrument on every track?
“Good question, man. I’m a multi-instrumentalist in the sense that I suck at a great number of instruments, but I could probably do something with a bunch of weird junk. I think I’d like the challenge of the lyric part more though, so I’m going to say the first”
8. A Japanese tour option comes up but only if you either (a) record a theme song for a popular cooking show or (b) metalize a pop song. Which is the lesser of two evils?
“Cooking show 100%. There are few things I hate more than when bands try to do the super brutal pop cover thing. Instantly turns me off. Been done to death and 9 out of 10 times it’s an obvious attempt to go viral as part of a business model”
9. Did you make any and have you broken any new year’s resolutions as yet?
“I’m supposed to keep a more positive mindset, but then I was reminded that there are deathcore bands doing Britney Spears covers out there, so I might start drinking again”
10. If life is a box of chocolates, which one are you eating first?
“If the point of that saying is that you never know what you’re going to get, then I’m hard pressed for an answer. But anything with coconut can get fucked”
11. When times get rough, what are you screaming along to on your headset?
“Either Natalie Imbruglia’s “Torn” or the new Knocked Loose EP. That shit’s brilliant”
12. What has been the strangest moment Fixed Fight have experienced?
“Our last tour through Eastern Europe had a bunch of strange occurrences. Christian getting absolutely shitfaced and then sleepwalking across the room while everyone’s trying to sleep, only to piss all over his own suitcase and Jesper, who was sleeping next to it. One of our bandmembers, who will remain nameless, and a friend from another band doing illicit drugs and communicating non-verbally with a local, who had purportedly not slept for 7 years. Playing a show for an audience of 2 girls, while the opening act decided to move their gear across the stage in the middle of the set. We later discovered that the 2 girls were only there because they wanted to have group sex backstage”
13. We mentioned in our review similarities between A Life Once Lost vocalist Robert Meadows and your very own Christian Ferdinand Engelhard in terms of vocal tones and style. If they went into a bare knuckle boxing match, who would win?
“Tough question. Christian is the nicest guy in the world and certainly not a brawler, but that may also be true of Robert Meadows. Couldn’t say. All else being equal, I think Christian’s size and sheer physical strength is going to put him at an advantage. He’s a mountain bike fanatic and a carpenter by trade, so he’s actually in decent shape”
14. If you could go back 5 years and give a nugget of knowledge to your younger self, what would you say?
“Sometimes you have to do something wrong before you can do it right. Failure is just as much a part of progress as success is and trying to avoid it entirely will only stunt your growth”
15. Pizza and beer is a sensational award winning combination so what are your favorites?
“No beer for me, but I’ll take some deep-dish pepperoni pizza with mountains of cheese”
16. If someone asks you what Metal is, what would you say?
“The number one cause of bad hairstyles the world over”
17. What was the last record you listened to; what's your go-to album and what is your guilty
pleasure?
“Jesus Piece’s “Only Self”, Every Time I Die’s “Hot Damn”, and Blink-182’s Cheshire Cat”
18. How brave are you? One Chip challenge, Ice bath or throw your bullets in the fire and
run like hell?
“Hit me with the one chip challenge. I can deal with the immediate pain and following heartburn well enough. I loathe the cold, and we don’t really have guns or bullets here in
Denmark, so that’s off the table. Plus, it would suck to die in a freak beer-fire explosion. I’m not that brave, I guess”
19. You’re watching a film on Netflix and suddenly you realize that one of your tunes is playing on the car stereo of the lead character. How do you react?
“That would be awesome. I’d love to have my music blatantly stolen by a major streaming company. We’re not in this to make money, and we’re not, just in case you were wondering. We just want to make cool music, and have it heard by people who might appreciate it. I honestly wouldn’t mind if people bothered to pirate our stuff”
20. Who would you thank in your Grammy Award winning speech?
“There are so many, far too many to mention here, so I’ll just say Jamey Jasta and leave it at that”
