Exclusive Interview: Kouta talk writing and recording “Aarnihauta”!

The second part of a creature double feature interview with Finnish Folk inspired Black Metal act Kouta is one of those that in some ways defies logic as we spoke to Arttu Pentikäinen about what went into writing and recording not only the bands debut EP “Aarnihauta” but also the other material they have waiting in the wings. That’s right – they may have only unveiled their first burnt offering to the World last month but they already have not only a sophomore EP but also a full length album completed and awaiting release! How is that even possible?!

What did you learn during the recordings of “Aarnihauta” that made the sessions that have followed for a sophomore EP and full length album easier? Be prepared, practise the songs together beforehand and trust the process (aka post-production)!”

How does the writing process of a new Kouta track start? Melody, riff or rhythm first? Tracks that I write usually start with a riff. I open my DAW and start jamming or sometimes a harmonious melody progression has been playing in my head for the whole day and all I can do is to sit down and record it. And from there bit by bit the different sections come together. It is important for me to think of the songs as a whole and then of that song as a part of a bigger whole.

I am a bit hesitant and so I usually try to finish the whole song in a day – or at least the main parts – so that in the evening I can send it to the band for an evaluation. Then if the guys like it, I can start adding stuff and editing various elements. And at one point Antti will demo some growls and we see if they fit. So far they’ve fit.”

What made you choose your native tongue rather than English as a language for the EP? It was somehow obvious from the start that we would be singing in Finnish. I don’t think we never even discussed any other option properly. Since the name KOUTA came first, I think it was natural to start a re-invention of an old myth in its original language. And luckily metal music is known to tolerate languages other than English – better than other music genres at least!”

The EP was recorded and mixed by Pekka Posio, known for his previous works with Marrasmieli, October Falls and Seraphiel; how did you choose to work with him and how did you find the process? Pekka Posio is a great guy to work with. His expertise is beyond the limits of this world when it comes to recording and mixing – an ear many would kill for. He is also super chill, but with a high standard. No garbage goes through his filter, yet he tolerates tomfoolery quite well. We had quite a few laughs in the studio, and I can only hope to be able to work with him in many days to come!”

For us gear nerds out there, can you tell us what you’re using gear wise (pedals, strings, drums etc) to get your sound? We all use Line 6 HX Stomps for our live setups. The guitarists play Solar guitars and I play my well-trusted Squier bass. Our drummer uses Pearl Drums and Centent Cymbals”

What difference would it make to you as a band if you could land an endorsement from a gear manufacturer? I think we would cherish and honour such an opportunity with great respect! Especially in the bass department.”

Aarnihauta” by Kouta is out now and available over at bandcamp.
