Review: “Self Titled” by Cassetta

It feels like the era of the supergroup knows no end in the internet age when collaboration is possible in a million different ways and when you look at the names of the bands that members of Cassetta have been part of, it’s no wonder there is plenty of interest. Featuring in their ranks members and former members of Suicide Silence, Fake Figures, Scars of Tomorrow, The Arson Choir, Pressure Cracks and The Keeper, the new band who hail from California, have a pair of cuts committed to tape mixed by Jeff Dunne (Make Them Suffer, Veil Of Maya, Emmure).

Logic dictates that given the bands prior convictions, the cover art and of course the presence of former Suicide Silence drummer Alex Lopez, that Cassetta would be making Metallic Hardcore at the heavyweight end of the spectrum. It’s a gut instinct that is proven right as “Swallow the Sun” finds vocalist Conor Eaton going scream for scream with Cameron Miller of Duhkha over some barbed riffs. The track is as brutal as it is brutally honest, an open letter and expression of pain, struggles of depression, loss and grief at losing loved ones. A cathartic outpouring over down tuned guitars, it’s a monster that feeds off the energy it projects and pulls you in like the gravity of a black hole. You know there are going to be breakdowns and the at the asylum where this plays twenty four seven, they two step their way out. As if that wasn’t enough to get excited about “Thin Blue Crime” is one of blistering intensity, that reaches and touches the void into Deathcore during its heavier moments while having that rampage of Metallic Hardcore and a heavyweight crush. Once again proving Metal doesn’t need to be complex to be a good time, this is the wake up call that says Cassetta are a band on the hunt, a restless pack of wolves who don’t need much more than a spark to start a fight [8/10]
