Throwback: “Smart Aleck” from Entombed!

Back in 1999 the magazine cover compilation compact disc was still King and Metal Hammer had a series called “Hammered” making a monthly appearance, featuring new material from the headline acts of the day. In March Volume 4 landed on our door mats with some gems from Cradle Of Filth, Fear Factory and Pist.On threatening to burst out ear drums but one track stood out like a stubbed toe. That was one labelled “Jack Worm” by Entombed, a cut and earworm riff and gruff vocals from the legendary LG Petrov. Except it wasn’t. It was instead “Smart Aleck“, an accidental mislabeling given away by the lyrics that made for our introduction to the Swedish Death Metal masters. 1998’s fifth studio album “Same Difference” may not be their finest hour but that song was the gateway to discovering their prior history and the buzzsaw guitar sound that made them special.
