Review: “Serpent’s Tongue” by Incineration in the Infinite

Hailing from New York City Ömer Doğramacı has made a name for himself as a multi instrumentalist and vocalist with a vast output spanning not one but two projects. The first of those is Fragmentary Solid Abyss which started with a blend of Synthpop and Electronic music before evolving into Melodic Black Metal, while the second… has distinctive tempo shifts and streamlined song structures based a bedrock of Blackened Doom Metal and is called Incineration in the Infinite. “Serpent’s Tongue” is the tenth EP to which the name is attached with two full length albums also floating in cyberspace, making Doğramacı nothing if not prolific.

There is an air of psychedelia as “Satanic Ritual in the Fog of Night” takes to flight in low and slow fashion, programmed drums and warped down tuned guitars creating a hedonistic satanic ritual from which there is no escape. If Stanley Kubrick had made a bloodthirsty vampire movie in which a group of biker hippies got murdered while higher than a Giraffe on the top of Mount Everest then this would be the sound track. Vocal whisperers on the wind add to the overall feel of hypnosis that approaches insanity while traditional song structures are abandoned in favour of creating something that borders on monolithic. Melancholic riffs in 1970’s inspired warm fuzzy tones give life to “Dancing Among the Stars” before evolving into something a little heavier and faster, the feeling that everything has been artificially slowed down and distorted creating a deep rooted claustrophobia. A splash of drone doom influence adds to the battery acid nausea of a cold industrial contrast, fear and loathing in Las Vegas achieved with consummate ease. The formula was never going to be disturbed for “The Gates of Daemons” but there are some more involved riffs on this one to give it a sinister edge. A heavier bass line creeps it the mix while the hellish whispers reverberate around your skull like a banshee’s wail from distant realms. Ömer Doğramacı wanders the wilderness with this one and while not all who wander are lost, this record feels like a raw demo of unfinished ideas but then perhaps that is the intension [6/10]
