Review: “Oblation ov Obliteration” by Nefas

With Nefas, Rajan Davis and crew have crafted an eclectic array of both musical and vocal approaches, that push the boundaries of creativity and extremity further than most new bands these days; while still remaining at all times challenging, interesting and memorable. I’m super glad that Rajan finally has a proper, personal showcase of the impressive guitar/bass playing that earned him a spot playing live bass for Gigan! Definitely listen to Nefas as soon as ya can and enjoy!” ~ Eric Hersemann (Gigan)

Describing themselves as a Psycosmic Deathgrind act, Nefas is a collaboration between members of Cryptic Gallbladder Splatter, Bedlam of Cacophony, Teeth and Wax People, all of whom have vast experience across the Technical, Dissonant, and Mathematical landscapes of Metal. Horror stories brought to life with eerie, sinister and menacing hellscapes is the calling card of the American four piece on a debut EP produced, engineered, and edited by Samur Khouja (Regina Spektor, Witches Of God, Ossification) at Seahorse Sound Studios in Los Angeles, California. Erol Ulug (Mortal Wound, Teeth, All Out War) at Bright Lights Studio then mixed and mastered, leaving artwork to Moonroot Art.

Sometimes when it comes to records with such rich heritage one single player can dominate and ultimately the whole record can end up not living up to the hype. When it comes to “Oblation ov Obliteration” by Nefas however that is anything but the case. The spine juddering soundscape of “Xenomorphic” takes us down a nightmarish road and borders on the avant-garde, fusing together technical, dissonant and mathematical metal components to scramble your brain with shock and awe tactics. It’s the kind of bone rattling that makes you wonder what you just heard as Erik Burkhead-Fernandez delivers a demonic vocal performance of throat shredding storytelling, the polyrhythmic patterns that surround it creating utter sonic devastation. Growls and rumbles collapse the ear canals as the beasts awaken beasts and the cut stops on a dime just when you think it’s going to murder you in cold blood.

Vocal layering is put to good use as “Spiral Degradation” so you get cleaner uncleans as well as the brutal ones to augment that sense of a descent into madness and insanity in the black depths of Hell. The technical guitars continue to impress with no stone unturned in getting the sound they want out of them, Rajan Davis often able to do the work of a pair of players on this nightmarish piece soaked in dark atmospherics. There is a certain groove to the opening riffs of “Mindstream Transference” and having been designed to make you feel uncomfortable, it flirts with fleeting chugs and squeals to push the envelope as far as across the table as it can go without falling off the edge. Alejandro Aranda deserves a lot of credit for his performance at the drum stool on this one, raising up a storm of percussive battery in a gradual build that gets nastier and more intense as the cut plays out. A debut of the highest quality from seasoned musicians, this one leaves you craving more while hiding behind a cushion, afraid to hear what more Psycosmic Deathgrind might sound like [8/10]
