Exclusive Interview: Godeater talk “Alvorecer”!

It may sound like a cliche but for Glasgow Technical Death Metal outfit Godeater, their new EP “Alvorecer” is very much the dawning of a new era for the band. After their critically acclaimed album “Vespera” broke the mold for the genre in which they create back in 2022, everything should have been wonderful. However life has a funny way of throwing you a few curve balls when you least expect it and before the year was out bassist Will Keogh and vocalist Josh Graham both exited stage left. Regrouping drummer Tim Coulson and guitarists Ross Beagan and Andrew Macdonald recruited vocalist Jamie Harrison, a man known for his work in The Argent Dawn, Nexilva and Sleep Inertia and began to work on new material. We had the pleasure of the company of Ross Beagan to discuss it all and the conversation went something like this…

It’s been three years since your last taped confession and a lot has changed. How has new vocalist Jamie Harrison settled in? Did he have to pass an initiation test to get the role? “He has, I think! Not really, he showed up to a rehearsal, we did a tour together and that was sort of that! We’ve got a pretty low bar, just be chill!”

As we mentioned in our review, we first witnessed Godeater on stage at Tech-Fest at Newark Showgrounds in 2017; how do you feel about the past eight years of Godeater? What were some of the highs and lows? “Highs are naturally releasing music, touring, meeting and connecting with people out there! Lows, we’re a band, there’s a lot of them for one reason or another! It’s a boring answer but that period from 2020-2022 was diabolical for me – getting cut short in the middle of an album cycle, not knowing when anything could happen, trying to stay motivated, putting an album together, people leaving and needing to rebuild the band… usual stuff really!”

What was it like working with Studio Fredman (In Flames, Obscura, Architects) for the mix and master of “Alvorecer”? Was returning to them after they did such a wonderful job with your sophomore album “Vespera” a no brainer? “Nice and easy, I’m a huge fan of Fredrik’s work and I think he gets what we’re about at this point so it’s a fairly simple process! I will say that it was quite intimidating at first, he’s a legendary producer/mixer, he’s mixed all these records, and I’m emailing him telling him things I think should be different… it’s weird but we’ve done it a few times now so it’s all good!”

If we’re the product of our genes and our influences, who are your influences and what are in your jeans? “There are always the staples from the more extreme side of thing, Cattle Decapitation, Between the Buried and Me, The Black Dahlia Murder, Aborted, all the usual stuff. I was also listening to a lot of Ulcerate and Der Weg einer Freiheit, and there’s a bit of metalcore influence creeping in from bands like Misery Signals, Silent Planet and Invent Animate. A broad spectrum of heavy! As for my jeans? Boring stuff, phone, wallet, headphones, probably the van keys…”

What are your aspirations for 2026? Touring Europe? Playing a major festival? Gain an endorsement? Appear on the cover of Metal Hammer Magazine? We’d love to make it over into mainland Europe on this upcoming album cycle! We’ve been close a few times but never been able to really make it work for one reason or another, so it’d be cool to finally make that happen!”

What’s next for Godeater? “Same as it ever was: getting back on the road, taking Alvorecer to the stage! We’ve just announced two special Scottish release shows for January 2026 –

17th January – Glasgow, Audio
18th January – Edinburgh, Legends

That’s the main focus, but we’re working on getting a new album out into the world too!”

Alvorecer” by Godeater is out 28th November 2025 with merch available here.
