Review: “Disgusting Existence” by Endless Curse

Bassist and vocalist Erik Sailer, guitarist and vocalist Willi Döhring and drummer Alexander Döhring have been on the left hand path of self destruction since 2009 with an unholy trinity of EPs not to mention two full length albums on the subject of partying, drugs, drinking and not giving a f***. The Germans play a blend of Hardcore, Grind and Old School Death Metal laced with dark gallows humour, balancing social criticism and irony with fast and loud thrills and spills. Mixed and mastered by Michael Kraxenberger (Altar of I, Bloodfinch, Denial Of Death) at Sick of Sound Studio, the latest burnt offering from Endless Curse is “Disgusting Existence“…

If you can imagine waking up in a hot, dry, dusty basement dwelling to the sound of the rhythmic hammering of nails into a coffin coming from above the floorboards then you have the scene setting “Intro” piece in a nutshell, a low budget horror movie style piece that will get the brains cogs whirling quickly about what nasties await. Its a classic something and nothing glimpse into the darkness that bleeds psychological horror without actually giving anything away only for “The Rite” to leave absolutely nothing to the imagination. A stab in the dark that cuts to less than three minutes of Dying Fetus or Misery Index like Death Metal, it has the brutality to know you into next week with churning groove laden riffs and bludgeoning rhythms. Furious vocals vomit the lyrics forth as “Death March Reborn” drives down the darkness, another potent skull smashing moment of madness driven by sinister mid tempo chug. Whether its intentional or not the record sounds a little raw in places with the drums a little flat but rather than be an issue that adds to the old school nostalgia of it like a throwback to tape trading days. There is even time to shoehorn in a gang chant passage for fists in the air during live shows before the introduction to “Præy” sends a chill down the spine. A whispered moment as if from Hannibal Lecter himself precedes the lyrical title track, a punishment beating in grinding Death Metal with all the dark and brooding atmosphere you could possibly want. If the party is some kind of occult ritual that ends in a virgin sacrifice to some kind of heathen god then you can be sure this will make the news at ten [7/10]
