Review: “Jesus Ain’t Cumming” by Nobody

For the past five years Tuomas Kauppinen has been playing guitars, bass, drums and even a harmonica as the multi instrumentalist and vocalist behind Dark Folk Metal project Nobody. He’s been nothing short of prolific in his output with “Jesus Ain’t Cumming” being his third EP of 2025 following “Shadow Companions” in March and “Saint Devil In The Fields” in May. This time around cover art was done by Don Artvaara with Jimi Kauppinen at Stellar Sounds Studios in Finland handling production duties and based on his previous endeavors we’re expecting more in the vein of Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds or the acoustic songs from Wednesday 13

The man behind Nobody, Tuomas Kauppinen comments the single: “The city of Pompeii was destroyed when it was founded in defiance of the people against the gods, next to a volcano that would eventually bring about its annihilation. The song is a memory of its people, their loves and hates, the downfall of an empire that could not survive its sicknesses, nor the remedies it would have needed to heal.”

There is something of the legendary Johnny Cash in opening track “Crowspeak“, the distinctly American twang to the acoustic guitars enough to crack a smile on the face of even the hardest of metal heads. Its the darkness of the story itself, delivered in unflinching fashion, that might make you wince however as the song is a murder ballad of the highest order. Crows feast on the corpse of a dead abusive husband, his wife having murdered him for harming their child. There is little left to the imagination on this one and that’s part of the joy of it as Kauppinen simply tells things as they are and lets you be the judge, jury and executioner. Sonically a little more complex “North star” is something of a love story but not the gushing kind like you might find in an 80’s power ballad. Instead there are a few almost ethnic moments and as Kauppinen keeps things tasteful and melodic before moving into the deeper waters of the tale of “Pompeii“. As a tale its one which pretty much everyone will know, something that lends itself to instant appeal, however that also leaves nowhere to hide. Lingering on small details while building the mountain of the narrative Kauppinen ensures his re-telling is one that is absorbing, the melancholia of the soundscape very well crafted. The almost ethnic touches from “North star” return on “The Gutter Screams” for a song about those who have slipped through the cracks in society and found themselves homeless. A tale told with a sense of irony, almost in gallows humour from the perspective of someone who doesn’t see someone downtrodden who needs help but someone who fears being murdered for the contents of their wallet. A song that is thought provoking and intentionally so, it works very well before the twang of “Truth Seeker“. What’s interesting about the final track is that Kauppinen uses a slightly different voice, while playing what sounds like a lap steel guitar. All in all another wonderful addition to the Nobody discography and the perfect sound track for a hangover [7.5/10]
