Review: “Detritus Of Ruin” by Nihilanth

“Lyrically the EP has a dark undertone, we touch on subjects close to home such as self-destruction. But also, observations on the world around us, corruption and prejudice we see and experience in organised religions, hatred towards the “other” because we have been forced fed lies and propaganda to server the interests of the wealthiest 1%. Creativity we also wanted to step it up this time around, adding  bits of synth or strings to add more layers to the songs sonically.” ~ Nihilanth

Following their 2023 debut EP “Destroyer of Worlds”, Northern Irish heavyweights Nihilanth went through several lineup changes before settling as a five piece comprising vocalist Aidan Thompson, bassist Jim Ward, drummer Andy Parkinson alongside guitarists Lee Park and Pete Craig, the later of whom also provides backing vocals. The group are seasoned veterans who have done time in such household names as Towers, Clawed Back, Death of a Salesman and Heel of Achilles with Deathcore and Death Metal very much running through their veins. Now they return with something more refined in sophomore EP “Detritus Of Ruin“, promising themes of self-destruction that sit alongside wider societal observations, tackling corruption, prejudice and the influence of organised religion with unflinching honesty…

A guest vocal appearance from Belfast Hardcore crew Patrick Scanlon of If It Bleeds graces “Ruin” which hits hard as an ominous DJent driven brute of neck snapping poly-rhythmic chug. Thompson’s vocals a scalding as they cut through the intense atmosphere tension in perpetual darkness, the rise and fall of the uncompromising piece utterly glorious as the pair of vocalist search for resolve in a sea of madness. The rhythmic battery offers no respite as the band show no remorse with the pummelling, groove laden attack of “The Emergent Truth“, a track which pushes into more technical territory with some intricate leads. Thompson flirts with the kind of dry, raspy vocals upon which Robert Meadows made his name with A Life Once Lost, the off kilter, odd time signature moments seriously impressive as he screams “show me the gates of HELL!” at the top of his lungs.

Raw aggression is balanced with ominous atmospherics and a deep seeded sense of control as the palm muted chugs embrace “Fangs“, a cut that finds Thompson delivering a more emotive harsh vocal performance. Its as if this one is personal and the lyrics weigh heavier on his head as the eight string guitars and rumbling bass grind at the cranium. The track finds the band at their most intense, the venomous vocals enhancing the powerful sonic abrasions without the help of someone like Buster Odeholm, who in the studio could no doubt push the five piece that little bit further. Synths and programming are introduced as “Fractured” takes shape, the track twisting and contorting as the harrowing and bleak lyrical narrative unfolds. Icy, haunting background sounds embellish this one as the riffs churn and burn, the layered sound creating something of greater depth and texture. The death note of the record is the venomous “Don’t Prey for Me“, a track with a blood spitting vocal performance from Thompson and a couple of nuanced rhythmic moments in an ocean of groove laden Deathcore. Powerful and poisonous, this beast walks where Gods fear to tread, the downtempo final moments a masterclass in how to annihilate the weak [8/10]
