Review: “Never-Ending Quest for Purpose” by Legionary

This new album is a continuation of the path we took on our last EP, “Prison Realm”. For fans of that EP, this new album is in that style again, but on steroids! Things sound heavier, more epic, and more massive on this album. All of the same guys from the last release have returned, including vocalist Chris Clancy (As I Lay Dying, Invictus, Mutiny Within) and lead guitarist Tony Barhoum (Chaos Sanctuary, Condition Critical), but the big addition this time around was mix engineer, Mike Low. Things have never sounded this BIG on a Legionary release!“ ~ Frank D’Erasmo

After the success of 2024 EP “Prison Realm” there can be no doubt about mastermind, multi-instrumental, composer and founder Frank D’ Erasmo feeling inspired to create another album with Legionary. A Melodic Death Thrash project that once played live regularly on the New York scene, it’s now very much a one man studio project based in New Jersey, made possible with the help of guest musicians. This time out D’Erasmo has spared no expense in creating his vision with “Never-Ending Quest for Purpose” being not only adorned by artwork from the legendary Mark Cooper (Vulvodynia, Rings Of Saturn, Carrion Vael) but also having been mixed and mastered by Mike Low (Aborted, Inferi, Shadow Of Intent). As if that wasn’t enough, it was also engineered by Ben Karas (Thank You Scientist, Slaughtersun, Windfaerer) who also performs violin on the final song…

There might be some who consider these five songs an EP but as the record surpasses thirty minutes of new music the Frank D’Erasmo, Chris Clancy and Tony Barhoum are well within their rights to call it a full length album. Ironically enough, the first cut isn’t the deepest as “Sentenced to a Life of Chronic Guilt” clocks in at just 134 seconds, the sounds of a thunder storm broken by an urgent, technically leaning Death Thrash riff that bursts into rich melody with vibrant leads and an elegant epic solo. As instrumental introduction pieces go its nothing short of jaw dropping, setting the tone for the record by taking a crowbar to the minds eye and ensuring Legionary have your attention. Vocalist Chris Clancy has always had an impressive range and on “If the Judges Became the Judged” he demonstrates that to the fullest, giving us urgent barked harsh verses and a lush Traditional Heavy Metal style sung chorus that is fearfully addictive. A beast of a track that pulls from Thrash, Death and Melodic Death Metal influences, it’s majestic even before Tony Barhoum’s ripper of a solo, the lyrical narrative offering pause for thought in a world that often feels like its against us. If it seemed impossible that the trio could pull together the same elements to create another masterclass in epic song writing then the title track “Never-Ending Quest for Purpose” proves that the trio have it all within their hands. The transitions between the heavy and the melodic parts are as slick as they come so you get this big arena sizes sing-a-long chorus that rises from fierce verses with a lyrical narrative that resonates. A sweeping solo from Barhoum is beautiful as it cuts against the urgent, technical rhythms and when you put it all together you get something that is nothing short of spellbinding.

The pummelling percussive whirlwind that drives “Controllers of Perception” feels like a tornado of souls and Legionary consolidate this burnt offering with another warning about those who would seek to lead us like lambs to the slaughter. By the seconds spin if you’re not singing along or banging your head then you need to seek medical intervention, such is the power of this collection, the trio sounding incredible together. They don’t come much grander than the eleven and a half minute surpassing finale that is “Story Without Closure“, a track which is embellished with violins from Ben Karas but it doesn’t necessarily start out that way with the first couple of minutes or so being some of the heavies moments on the record. The bass has been brought forward a little in the mix on this one, the grit and integrity of the lyrics bleeding into the harsh vocal performance, a reference to the bands previous record “Prison Realm” being a wonderful touch. The extended duration of this one is time put to good use as it enables Frank D’ Erasmo to get expansive with his rhythms during longer instrumental passages, bursts of blast beats and huge cymbal crashes helping maintain an electrifying energy throughout. There are even a few nods to the likes of Morbid Angel in the flow before the melancholia of the final moments. An enthralling, captivating and spellbinding record, this one needs to be heard to be believed [9/10]
