Review: “Global Cataclysm” by Thunderkill
An International Thrash n’ Heavy project that unites musicians from North and South America, Thunderkill have stitched up all their stab wounds so they’re battle ready once more with a debut album titled “Global Cataclysm“. They’ve brought in the big guns too with Indonesian artist Timbul Cahyono (Sadistic Force, Massacre, Defeated Sanity) providing the cover artwork and Tony Lindgren (Dyscordia, Leprous, The Halo Effect) at the legendary Fascination Street Studios in Sweden mastering the album. The affair is produced and mixed by guitarist, bassist, backing vocalist and mastermind Keith D. (Arctic Sleep, Unearthed Elf) who is aided and abetted by long time co-conspirator and drummer Nick Smalkowski (Arctic Sleep, Djunah, Fake Limbs) and Argentinian vocalist Milagro “Miny” Espin (Post20)…
If the track listing doesn’t give it away, this collection of eight vicious cuts have overarching themes of war, political corruption, environmental destruction, insanity and the bleak trajectory of humanity in their beating black bitter hearts, the trio promising scalding, groove orientated Thrash Metal as the accompaniment. They begin putting the world to rights with title track “Global Cataclysm” which begins in melodic and yet slightly sinister fashion with classic acoustic guitars building to 80’s style adrenaline fuelled Thrash. There is the distinctive air of early Metallica with that, the gang chanted vocals from Keith D., Nick Smalkowski and Butch Marino adding weight to the savage screams of Miny. Stylistically there is nothing you haven’t heard before but it’s all done with such finesse that it sounds wonderfully nostalgic and has a real charm about it.
Anarchist Punk elements are interwoven into the scalding “Scorched” which has plenty of Thrash Groove, the bass being brought forward in the mix to give it more flavour. A flaming solo has a rich melody, touches of whammy bar action giving it that old school flair with hints of Hardcore influence to bolster the final moments. It feels very much like an ode to a bygone era, a sonic love letter that reminds us of battle jackets and tape trading around San Francisco Bay.
A longer melodic intro to “Residual Radiation Hazard” makes way for rapid fire riffs and screamed vocals which push the band towards Death Thrash. They don’t quite reach that level of brutality sonically but you could easily see them evolving in that direction should they so desire, Miny’s savage vocals leading the way. “Trauma Conditioning” is another white knuckle roller coaster ride, Smalkowski’s powerful rhythms driving the band forward with gusto, subtle tempo shifts making all the difference as trio follow in the footsteps of bands like Electrocutioner and Hazzerd in holding the torch for the once maligned genre.
There are some short lived sung vocals during the chorus of “Destroyer Of Reality” which are bolstered by more gang chants, Miny impressing with her diverse range but whats interesting is that the band haven’t opted for a sing-a-long by any means. Instead they continue with a Thrash or be Thrashed approach, the bass solo at the start working really well. Lyrically this one feels cathartic, a tale from the asylum where all that is known is a padded cell and a straight jacket, something which will resonated with anyone who has suffered from anxiety or depression.
Flipping the script from the introspective to the politically charged and socially aware “Profit Of Devastation” blasts those who brainwash the masses and desensitise them while feeding their lust for money and power. That ability to blend lyrical narratives seamlessly is no to be underestimated as it keeps the record from getting boring while maintaining the intensity of the music.
“Dismantling The Mechanism” has that 80’s action movie charm to it as it rages against the system with an anti-hero kind of vibe as the riffs fly in all directions, lines like “Cybernetic combat of corruption and deceit” making you think of the darkness of RoboCop or Terminator as the sonic abrasions inflict damage to your cranium. The lyrics continue to paint images in the minds eye with “Beyond The Boiling Point” with the band commanding a warship that seeks total annihilation, Keith D. offering up arguably the best solo of the collection in the process. A poised and potent collection of scalding Thrash cuts of righteous indignation that are very much timeless, this is one that needs to be heard [7.5/10]
