Review: “Winds of Sorrow” by Eternal Mourn
Born to burn as a collaboration between drummer Debla and guitarist/vocalist Gabriel (Black Oath, The Rite, Extirpation), and later completed by guitarist Eros (Extirpation, Funest) and bassist/vocalist Santo (Araphel, Demonomancy), Italian Death Doom Metal newcomers Eternal Mourn seek to pay homage to the legends of the 1990’s in genre defining acts such as Paradise Lost, Katatonia and Cemetary. They emerge from the undergrowth as a quartet needing a vessel to channel their feelings of melancholy, frustration, inner decay and loss into music drowned in darkness. Recorded at Spvn Studio in Guanzate Italy, their first record is “Winds of Sorrow“.
Comprising an unholy trinity of tunes that all surpass the seven minute duration, the record begins with “Falling Tears“. A cut of sombre, sobering atmospherics and mournful melodies, it has majestic soaring melancholic leads during glorious longer instrumental passages that build the mountain in enthralling fashion. Gabriel’s gravelly death growls give the track a palpable sense of grit and integrity, his roars of “I’m dying!” an integral part of what makes this a captivating and soul stirring piece.
The bands previous experiences shine through on “Embracing Tragedy” as they find the perfect balance between the melodic and the heavy with consummate ease. Everything flows together beautifully, the bass solo at the bitter black heart of this one a moment of wonderful quality that matches the style and grace of its surroundings perfectly despite the atmosphere of utter desolation. If you heard this without knowing it was a debut record, then you’d think it was from a band who had spent twenty years or more perfecting their art over many albums, such is the quality in this record.
A couple of clean vocal lines earlier on in the record served as something of a warning with title track “Winds of Sorrow” having an entire clean verse, which is actually masterfully done, the contrast between them and the trademark guttural roars working really well. Having a hummable melody and achingly beautiful leads fuels the fire, the bass on this one once again impressing. As a quartet Eternal Mourn may embrace the darkness as they search for salvation but in truth their future is so bright it burns your eyes [8/10]
