5 Albums I Want To Be Buried With #23: Beyond Extinction!

There are special occasions and then there are occasions which you tell anyone who will listen about at great length every time you’ve had a few jars in the pub. One such occasion promises to take place on 7th March when Essex Death Metal act Beyond Extinction will be performing their debut album “Where They Gather” in full for one night only. Hand on heart they promise its going to be the only occasion upon which they will do that and so The Black Heart in Camden is the place to be. The show will find them joined by Mastiff and Tribe Of Ghosts with a celebration event at Raven Records before hand that will offer a Q&A with the band, signing opportunity and artwork gallery with Max Marshall amongst other things. Before that takes place, we had the pleasure of a conversation with drummer Niall Ali about 5 albums he wanted to be buried with…

The premise is simple: “Back in ancient Egypt they believed that the items their Kings were buried with would travel with them into the afterlife and so part of the burial ritual would see the mummified bodies surrounded by chariots, gold and more. Fast forward to now. If there were five albums that you’d want buried in the coffin with you to take to the afterlife, what would you choose?

1. “Nadir” by Black Tongue

This record was my main inspiration in achieving the feeling of dread through writing and arranging music. It’s an example of how one album can change the way you approach your instrument so for me it’s special

 2. “Leil el Ashekin” by George Wassouf

I grew up around this music. Even in the afterlife, I’d want that reminder of where I come from and the emotional depth of this album.

3. “Wormwood” by The Acacia Strain

“Personally this album holds significant sentimental value. It’s a go to if I wanna crash out but beyond that, I naturally lean into music that interests me rhythmically. The album rises and drops in intensity, changing feels and always hitting a half time or 2 step when it needs that. 10/10 for real.”

4. “Absolute” – Kublai Khan

“This album is just vibes for me. I listen to it all the way through at least once a month when I need that adrenaline boost. It’s got groove, stinky riffs and the shouty man goes “FUCK YOU”.”

5. “Horizons” by Parkway Drive

“This one was my gateway into heavy music. Parkway Drive has always been that band for me but this album in particular has been there since day 1 in my journey and I can’t give it enough credit for shaping the drummer I turned out to be”
