Review: “Welcome | Death” by Collapse The Sky

It’s hard to believe but it has been a decade since Norwich Metalcore merchants Collapse The Sky gave us their first cryptic writings with debut album “Seven Eyes” in 2016. Since then they’ve evolved to fuse elements including orchestrations and synths to their barbed riffs while playing shows all over this green and pleasant land. Both Bloodstock and Download Festivals have been conquered in the process with Lee Margaillan, Flynn Green, Luke Fowler and Karl Morse more than happy to go toe to toe on stage with any and all takers. After three albums this time out they opted for something a little shorter with the aforementioned Green producing and mixing before handing over to Myroslav Borys (7eventh Sea, Confessions Of A Traitor, Last Hounds) at Jigsaw Audio to master…

Ethereal synths and programming provide an almost choral introduction to “Welcome | Death” before the savage vocals from Margaillan rise to the surface with some seriously ferocious riffs. A dark and foreboding cut with a vocal hook that gets inside your head, its reminiscent of the heavier end of “Blind Until We Burn” era Kissing Candice with an introspective lyrical narrative that resonates. There are also a couple of nice lead licks in this one that ensure the record has a potent and powerful title track to set the tone in emphatic fashion. Turning up the heat and intensity “Half Life” puts bounce in the mosh pit with staccato riff breaks wrapped in eerie keys, some odd time signature moments adding tastefully to the pummelling rhythmic battery. A slick solo is a thing of beauty before some DJent fuelled riffage takes over, this one being perfect for Halloween as Margaillan severs his ties with someone causing more than their fair share of strife.

There are flavours of “Iowa” era Slipknot in the wall of noise which Collapse The Sky create for “The Reckoning“, a curious almost Gothic chorus with dark synths separated by arguably the band at their heaviest with some seriously venomous vocal moments, bombastic bass and huge cymbal crashes. The solo on this one is an absolute ripper as the band prove that there is more to them that meets the ear, refining their sound, tightening their hooks making everything so much sharper.

Introducing clean vocals for the first time “The Fear Inside” is no less heavy or aggressive than any other cut as the band prove they don’t need to slow things down to incorporate them. Bold and fear, the chorus helps make this one an arena filling anthem that you can scream along to in pure catharsis but it’s the savage breakdowns and resonating lyrics that pull it all together. It’s by no means woe is me and instead has that grit and integrity that means you feel it so much more.

Mecia-jade Holden of Aethoria fame provides guest vocals on closer “Requiem“, her soaring cleans not only absolutely stunning but also providing a wonderful contrast to Margaillan’s harsh screams with which they are interwoven. There is an aching beauty to this one which draws you in, the crushing guitar work off set by the melancholia of the keys and if you’ve loved an lost anyone then it’s going to pull at your heart strings. This record is nothing short of stunning, soaked in impeccable musicianship from a band who build atmosphere impressively and strike with force as and when necessary [9/10]
