NEWS: The Crawling return to requiem!
A complete acoustic reconstruction of “Bound To The Negative (Requiem)“, a song originally released on “All of This for Nothing” which takes pride of place on the new EP “What We Leave Behind” from The Crawling has been given the full music video treatment. Reborn in acoustic form, it has taken on a new depth and emotional weight with a different atmosphere to the original.
Guitarist and vocalist Andy Clarke: “I received an acoustic guitar as a present, and initially wasn’t really sure what to do with it. I sent it to my guitar tech to have it tuned down to B, so I could experiment with some existing Crawling songs. Almost immediately, I started playing ‘Bound To The Negative’, and it really lent itself to the acoustic arrangement. I recorded a version, didn’t let anyone hear it, and it sat there for about a year.
When we recorded ‘A Song to Nurse the Sickness’, we started thinking about putting together a release. The theme of nostalgia seemed to fit perfectly with revisiting ‘Bound To The Negative’. We were looking back at a song we already knew, but rewriting and reinterpreting it, much like we do with our own memories. It wasn’t something we’d planned. Everything just came together naturally, and the two songs made sense as a release. I found the prospect of releasing a song with entirely clean vocals quite unnerving. There’s nowhere to hide without the death metal vocals, and it feels incredibly exposed. But we wanted to do it, so we did.”
“For the video, I wanted to create something isolated, dark and melancholic, but with a real sense of space. Adrien [Crozet, bass] and I went out around midnight and found somewhere in our city that was quiet, isolated and exposed. We had very limited lighting and only about twenty minutes to shoot because everything was running on batteries. That forced us to work quickly, and the whole thing is quite raw as a result. But it works. It came out exactly as I’d hoped. I think it captures the loneliness of looking back on things. No one knows how you see the past.”
