Review: “Dritfeit UFO” by Husmanskost

It’s time to rise and grind because after December’s split EP with Ground Sweat Norwegian Experimental Grind duo Husmanskost are back to turn your brains to mush. They’ve offered up their fifth full length album in a decade of destruction with mastermind and multi instrumentalist Kai Andre Kofoed doing his first full album as a vocalist after two EPs. As ever, Niklas Mortensen graces the drum stool and seeing as its lyrically in their native tongue, we’ve taken a moment to translate the song tiles to give you a clue as to what it’s all about. After all, listening to an album in a language you don’t speak is much like watching a foreign film and to us at least, the song title translation is the equivalent of the subtitles. Recorded at Dreamfarm Studios in rural Norway, “Dritfeit UFO” was mixed and mastered by Ola Langli (Cleaver, Panzerskrekk, Chton) and is wrapped in by artwork by Lis Meistad…

Early 90’s Maryland Death Metal influences have saturated opening cut “En jævla eim av streitinger” (or “A F**king Whiff of Strife“) like the clothes worn by someone walking the moors in during a thunderstorm. Nuanced rhythms and powerful percussion with a rich dark melody are the audio equivalent of an 80% cocoa dark chocolate bar to accompany a pint of Skull Crusher coffee, the caustic vocals from Kai Andre Kofoed pretty damn brutal. Not so much a whiff of strife as an air of Progressive Death Metal with mid tempo crush despite being just 100 seconds. The drum sound is reminiscent of the one that Mauricio Marín used during his time in Twitch Of The Death Nerve, something that rises to the surface in the bone rattling “Ufør på Mars” (or “Disability on Mars“), another blood and thunder tune that will instantly crack a smile. Things start to get crazy however with the blast beat laden onslaught of “Ufo`n te`n IFA” (or “UFO’s are IFA“) with its earworm of a main riff not only hummable but electrifying alongside a couple of savage death growls.

Using the bass like a second rhythm guitar works incredibly well on “Super syko sukkerfabrikk” (or “Super Psycho Sugar Factory“), a rip roaring tune with a clanky bass tone usually associated with loose strings. Violently turbulent with rapid fire tempo changes and neck snappingly good urgent riffage, it’s the metaphorical equivalent of letting diabetes take the wheel as you stuff your face full of Krispy Kreme donuts. There is a familiarity about some of the riffs in this record, including the one in “Digital Delirium Demens” (or “Digital Delirium Dementia“) which gives the album an instant appeal. More a case of them being in a similar vein to stuff you’ve heard in the Death Metal arena before rather than being recycles from elsewhere and they are done so well that even if they were in the later category, who cares? Bang your f**king head. Something that we have no doubt the late, great Trevor Strnad would have adored is “Utelivseliten” (or “The Nightlife Elite“), a desperate rampage through of a violent delight that will make you want to brain haemorrhage before the end. Riffs fly in all directions while the drums provide covering fire like an artillery shelling of the finest order.

By the time we reach “Føkk vïpps” (or “F**k You“) with its Melodic Death Metal leads at Death Grind speed, its easy to get overwhelmed by the sheer quality of the musicianship on display here. It takes serious dexterity, muscle memory and skill to play something this complex at the tempo of the damned and you can’t help but admire the work that has gone in to nailing these tracks. “Mallgoth 2K” feels like a Cannibal Corpse tune played at hyper speed, Mortensen hammering the groove with half a broken femur as it plays out. An ode to a German city in “Khöl” (or “Köln“) is a curious one that passes through your ear canal and out the other side of your skull via the cranium like a speeding bullet. The off kilter riffs are an absolute delight, Kai Andre Kofoed once again bringing his 90’s Death Metal influences to the table and conjuring something immense from them. “Panfløytepuling” (“Pan Flute F**king“) represents a full on work out for Mortensen behind the kit, no doubt leaving him in a sweaty heap once the recording was finished. A furious bludgeoning that isn’t anywhere near as raw sounding as you’d expect, it finds Kai Andre Kofoed leading us a merry dance with the guitars while barking his vocals like a beast from the black depths. Grand finale and title track “Dritfeit UFO” (“Crazy UFO“) has more twists and turns than a dime store thriller novel in paperback, bursting like a juicy fruit. All in all an absolute ripper of a record [8/10]
