5 Albums I Want To Be Buried With #13: Mashaile!

Back in February Sofia, Bulgaria based Death Thrash merchants Mashaile shared with us a record in “Tales of the Cured” which explores the dark side of human nature, where hypocrisy, temptation, envy, destruction, and self-destruction lead the characters to their inevitable fate. Adorned by artwork from Elina-Magdalena Dimitrova and inspired by the highly toxic ‘Oenanthe crocata‘, a plant that, when consumed, causes death with a chilling smile, it left us wondering just what what the last will and testament of the band would look like. So we spoke with vocalist Georgi I. Ivanov, guitarist Philip Kolarov and bassist Angela Milcheva and asked them to choose 5 albums they wanted to be buried with…

The premise is simple: “Back in ancient Egypt they believed that the items their Kings were buried with would travel with them into the afterlife and so part of the burial ritual would see the mummified bodies surrounded by chariots, gold and more. Fast forward to now. If there were five albums that you’d want buried in the coffin with you to take to the afterlife, what would you choose?

1 – Havok – “Time Is Up” (2011)

“The album that opened the door for me to modern thrash, this record has all the hallmarks of what this style is known for. All the evil riffs, combined with Pete Webber’s thunderous drumming, lay down truly aggressive instrumentals that give David Sanchez’s screeching vocals enough room to maneuver and  still produce a solid amount of memorable hooks. Songs such as “D.O.A.” and “Killing Tendencies” go for a more melodic approach, while “Prepare for Attack”, “Covering Fire” and the title track embody the straight-forward thrash structure to perfection. If you’re not familiar with new-school thrash bands, this is a great place to start.”

2 – Megadeth – “Rust in Peace” (1990)

“While some may associate thrash simply with constant monotone blast beating and fast picking, Megadeth’s fourth studio release shows how you can do so much more and still encapsulate that same raw energy. At times, you almost feel like you’re in the middle of a jam session with so many ideas flying around, but even then, order is still maintained. “Holy Wars… the Punishment Due” is still, in my view, one of the best compositions ever, while “Tornado of Souls” contains my favourite metal solo in any subgenre. This record is beyond doubt a classic, whatever you may think of it.”

3 – Sepultura – “Arise” (1991)

“Arise – rooted in thrash but leaning into death metal. Raw vocals, sharp riffs and relentless drumming – the kind of thing you’d want echoing in a tomb. It captures the feeling of a world in collapse, but with purpose and power.”

4 – Death – “The Sound of Perseverance” (1998)

“A focused and complex album — technical and progressive without showing off. The riffs are detailed and always changing, but the songs stay grounded. There’s a deep feeling, like someone pouring their soul out before it’s too late. Clear, thoughtful, and emotionally powerful, it still hits hard.”

5 – Opeth – “Ghost Reveries” (2005)

“Ghost Reveries is dark and atmospheric, with a slow and thoughtful pace. It mixes heavy riffs with quiet moments. The contrast between harsh and clean vocals adds depth. It’s layered, emotional, and stays with you long after it ends.”
