5 Albums I Want To Be Buried With #38: Rabidfest!

Another Halloween fright night means another incarnation of Oxford’s finest Metal Weekender Rabidfest and this year the line up is as strong as ever with a resurgent Hacktivist being kept honest by the new blood of up and coming bands like Devilhusk. So while we prepare to begin introducing those bands in a fortnightly feature, we figured it would be pretty damn cool to get talking to one of the festival organisers in Greg Brown. When he’s not busy putting on Metal 2 The Masses shows at the Jericho Tavern he actually has a minute to slap on some vinyl!

The premise is simple: “Back in ancient Egypt they believed that the items their Kings were buried with would travel with them into the afterlife and so part of the burial ritual would see the mummified bodies surrounded by chariots, gold and more. Fast forward to now. If there were five albums that you’d want buried in the coffin with you to take to the afterlife, what would you choose?”

1. Led Zeppelin “IV” – “This was a seminal album in my teens. My dad had it on vinyl and I played it constantly! I still have the pressing too!”

2. Mastodon – “Crack the Skye” – “I was a late-comer to Mastodon, but a work colleague was a super fan and I kinda got caught in his gravity. I listened to this album and fell in love. There isn’t a weak spot anywhere on this album!”

3. Beyond Creation – “Algorythm” – “I discovered BC when this album was released in 2018 and I’ve not put it down since! It is a masterpiece of brutal technical death metal, mixed with avantgarde styles! I love it!”

4. Rage Against The Machine – “Renegades” – “RATM were the very first metal band I got into, and although on a different day I might say a different album, the energy, power and enthusiasm across all their releases were life-changing. All 4 albums are some of the strongest releases I’ve ever heard”

5. Black Sabbath – “Master of Reality” – “Does Black Sabbath need an explanation? The godfathers of metal (in my mind) hit their peak with this release; the crushing riffs of Into the Void and Lord of this World echo perfectly with the Embryo and Orchid interludes, and the anthemic hits of Sweet Leaf and Children of The Grave make this the perfect album!!”
