Riff Police! Pull Over! #44: Slipknot Vs Pagan’s Mind!
Hailed erroneously as a “Pop-Metal classic” by the BBC and hilariously as having a “Grindcore riff” by Stylus Magazine, the opening single from Slipknot‘s 2005 third album “Vol. 3: The Subliminal Verses” was the rallying call that “Wait And Bleed” had been in 1999. An anthem that appealed to Metal Heads while also having that Radio friendly quality without managing to sell out. Blowing $400k on the music video helped with the big push and adds to the dark undercurrent of the song.
Just 2 years later Pagan’s Mind popped the cork on “God’s Equation”, an album Mixed by Stefan Glaumann (Rammstein, Backyard Babies). The Progressive Metal quinet from Skien Norway claim the film and ethos of the film Stargate as an inspiration but if you listen to “Evolution Exceeded” around the 3 minute mark, you’ll hear a familiar breakdown section. Influenced? Without a doubt.
