Riff Police! Pull Over! #49: Hole Vs Okilly Dokilly!

There is only room for one Ned Flanders inspired band on Planet Metal. When Phoenix Arizonian’s Okilly Dokilly appeared on the scene a couple of years ago with “White Wine Spritzer”, every Metal Head who grew up on The Simpsons couldn’t help but laugh satanically at the tongue in cheek humour of the themes. The bands sophomore album “Howdilly Twodilly” appeared in March to the fanfare of lead single “Reneducation”. But that opening chord pattern will seem familiar to an older fan.

Dropping the jokes about Bartcore and Krusty Punk, that riff is from the opening track of “Live Through This”, the 1994 album from Courtney Love’s Hole. You know, the one that appeared just a week after her husband and Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain died. As a single, “Violet” was a decent success and even got covered by Dope. Influenced? Without a doubt. It’s a 101 riff for every beginner guitarist on the planet.
