Vs. Tuesday: Two Bands! One Song! Who Wins?! FIGHT! Nirvana Edition
Nirvana. A name that has survived as Kurt Cobain’s legacy long after his passing. We’ve had numerous b-sides, live shows and demos from the archives as every second of the bands recorded work has been put out and Cobain’s riffs are the building blocks upon which most guitarists learn their trade.
In 2011 we had a few 20th Anniversary cover compilations to celebrate the bands seminal 1991 release “Nevermind”, an album that shaped generations of Metal Heads and Metal bands alike. One of those cover versions belonged to Story of the Year, who took on “Breed” for “Come As You Are”. The much loved St. Louis Missouri post-hardcore crew formerly known as Big Blue Monkey have a distinct grunge influence in their sound.
Perhaps the surprise of 2007’s “The Ascension” the only album to feature former Pulse Ultra and American Head Charge Guitarist Karma Singh Cheema, “Breed” is a song that suits the voice of OTEP frontwoman Otep Shayama more than most. The album threatened never to be released for a few months, held in limbo by the merger of Capitol and Virgin Records. Who wins? You decide!
