Riff Police! Pull Over! #127: Inimical Drive Vs Killswitch Engage!
Injecting a bit more swagger from their love of classic Metal bands like Dio, in 2013 Metalcore mainstays Killswitch Engage released single “In Due Time” from their album “Disarm the Descent“, their first with the returning Jesse Leach and recorded in their native Westfield Massachusetts. It was strong enough to earn them a Grammy Nomination for Best Metal Performance with signature hooks and melody thanks to guitarist Adam Dutkiewicz who also handled production duties. 7 years later and an Alternative Metal quintet hailing from St. Louis Missouri, Inimical Drive are putting together “Enemy” with guitarist Rich Kriete under the spotlight. The use of guitar layering giving the impression of two guitarists on the record, “Sacrifice” being a prime example of that. Its solid foundation and the chorus resonates well; while the structures that the likes of Killswitch Engage have used previously gives it an instant warmth and nostalgic feel but it’s that riff which has lawyers twitching…
