Riff Police! Pull Over! #150: Jorn Vs Dio !

The much loved and much missed Ronnie James Dio may not necessarily have looked like a Metal God to the untrained eye but his voice was are pure as the freshly fallen snow. In 1983 the second single from the infamous multi platinum selling “Holy Diver” record was “Rainbow in the Dark” which gained much attention thanks to MTV playing at the time what might have been considered now a controversial music video. Dio himself sings from a rooftop while members of the band scare away a man who appears to be stalking a woman as she walks down a London street lined with pornographic cinemas. The solo project of Norwegian Metal vocalist Jørn Lande (Ark, Beyond Twilight, Millenium, Vagabond, The Snakes, Masterplan) which goes by the name Jorn themselves recorded their fifth studio album 21 years later in 2008’s “Lonely Are The Brave” and from that you’d have to ask guitarists Jørn Viggo Lofstad and Tore Moren how the slowed down riff from “Rainbow in the Dark” made its way into “Night City” but here’s the real kicker. In 2010 they recorded a Dio tribute album of their own and then a covers album in 2016’s “Heavy Rock Radio” which features a cover of the very same song. Admission of guilt? Make of that what you will.
