Review: “Forge Your Future” by Spirit Adrift
The Nate Garret masterminded Spirit Adrift many have only released an album in the critically acclaimed “Enlightened In Eternity” in October last year but unable to tour they found themselves inspired by the events of recent times so naturally inked a trio of fresh cuts. Recording at Homewrecker Recording Studio in Tucson Arizona with Ryan Bram (Gatecreeper, Bitter Rivals, Creeping Death) at the helm, the tracks were handed over to the legendary Zeuss (Hatebreed, Municipal Waste, Witherfall) to handle the EP’s mixing and mastering.
The opening strains of “Forge Your Future” finds Spirit Adrift in the strains of Metallica with an introduction that is a timeless melody with almost Tudor stylings before stepping up into their usual Black Sabbath and Corrosion Of Conformity inspired sound with a mid tempo groove giving multi instrumentalist Garret plenty of opportunity to show off his magestic clean vocal talents. The song itself falls into to Traditional Metal category nicely and makes for excellent hangover music, the kind of thing you can put on and tune out to easily and as ever the classic solos are top notch with none of the over the top pitch harmonics of Zakk Wylde. The socially aware “Wake Up” is a thinly veiled attack on the people who were responsible for empty shelves during the panic buying phase of the Great Plague, a stab at those who take too much and stock pile when there is plenty for all. It’s refreshing that Garret doesn’t sit on the fence for this one and is happy to speak his mind when so many others would shy away from it. Sonically it’s classic Spirit Adrift at their finest as they simply pick up where they left off with the last album and charge into the night. What really stands out about this band is the undying quality in the music they produce. It would be easy to throw in something that is not up to the standard here but instead “Invisible Enemy” does the opposite, bringing in more riffs with some 80’s Metal vibes to finish on a high. There can be no argument, Spirit Adrift are at the top of their game [8/10]
