Throwback: “Who Must Die?” by Sepultura!

2021 can’t escape without us talking about the 20th Anniversary of the eighth studio record from Brazilian Thrash Metal legends Sepultura and their final one with Roadrunner Records called “Nation“. It also serves as the bands second with Derrick Green on the microphone while being rammed full of guest appearances, with Jamey Jasta of Hatebreed, Jello Biafra of Dead Kennedys, Cristian Machado of Ill Niño, João Gordo of Ratos de Porão and Apocalyptica all making their presence felt. Produced by Steve Evetts (Every Time I Die, Earth Crisis, Still Remains) and recorded across no less than five separate studios and while being a far superior album to its predecessor “Against” it failed to sell as many copies outside of the bands native Brazil for which the band blamed the label for a lack of support and a music video. For us it may not be our favourite Sepultura album but it still has plenty of fiercely direct and uncompromising anthems as well as being surprisingly Political. The cut of choice has to be “Who Must Die?” thanks to that riff from main man Andreas Kisser. Wonder if Max Cavalera has heard any of the bands Derrick Green era work…?
