The Black Map #225: The Grey from Cambridge
There are certain places that are synonymous with specific things and there is no escaping that when it comes to Cambridge, the first word that pops into the head is University, swifty followed by boat race like the beer that followed the shot and left you hungover. Yeah, we should probably get write less about alcohol and caffeine in general but hey, who makes the rules?
The reason for our metaphorical presence in the city of Cambridge is to talk about a band formed of drummer Steve Moore, bassist Andy Price and guitarist Charlie Gration who we first encountered as they joined Row Of Ashes in opening for Sacramento Screamers Will Haven on at Camden Underworld. That trio is The Grey, specialists in Doom laden Post-Metal of the instrumental variety who strike the perfect balance between atmosphere and riffs. Formed in 2017 they have dropped on our skulls a pair of albums in 2018’s self titled affair and 2020’s “Dead Fire“, the first an interesting proposition in sonic oblivion that pairs ambience againstĀ ferociousness like a sommelier pairs food and wine. The second on the other hand not only builds upon that but adds a sense of adventure as they build the soundscapes to trouble a post Apocalyptic World.
