Review: “The Death Of Us” by Greed Culture
“Everyone in the band has been in a slew of different types of bands over the years but we all started in hardcore. It’s been a lot of fun tapping into our roots to make these songs come alive and when it came time to decide where and with who to record, working with long-time friend Beau Burchell was a no-brainer. He makes everything sound amazing and is literally the best guy. We are very excited to get these songs out into the world and start playing shows with our friends.” ~ Martin Diaz, guitars
Taking their name from the idea that the majority of the problems in our world and society are rooted in greed, Southern California Hardcore crew Greed Culture formed in the summer of 2022, looking to combine “full throttle” music “that blow off as much steam in the shortest amount of time“ with the message that despite having the means and technology to repair a lot of major issues but that progress is almost always stifled by greed. They entered the studio in early 2023 with producer Beau Burchell (Senses Fail, Saosin, Taken) at the boards, the results of those sessions went on to form their debut EP “The Death Of Us”…
…As hard as nails, the fists start to fly from the very first few seconds of “Sync The Wave” as Greed Culture bring Metal riff tones to their heavy end of Hardcore sound. An adrenaline fuelled onslaught which goes straight for the jugular is allowed to slow to downtempo groove in the final third, a masterstroke to allow the two steppers to hit the pit, the gang chant moment adding fuel to that fire. Feedback between the cuts help give the record the incendiary energy of a live show before the gallop of “Take It Back” rears its ugly head, another fierce, short, sharp ramage through the streets with Greed Culture gunning for a fight. The message they want to convey is loud and clear for everyone to hear, the whirlwind of energy they create meaning it hits with the full force of an uppercut from a prize fighter. The fist in the air anthem is “Break Through Sight“, rammed full of gang chants and designed to be fodder for high fives and stage dives all night long. It finds the band employing that same downtempo drop formula for the last third and again the band carry it off with verve and swagger. The poison dwarf of the record is “Reset“, a surprisingly groove laden 127 second burst of high octane violence that doesn’t bore us by getting straight to the chorus before “The Source” rounds off this opening shot across the bow with a scorcher. Approaching the power of Texas heavyweights Kublai Khan, this record is a powerful statement piece, that sets the tone for what could be a highly decorated career in the scene… [8/10]
