Review: “M.T.M.D (Maximum Threshold, Minimum Decay)” by Chüzo

“The sound of the band evolved from, initially, Grindcore, to hardcore, to now Aggro Metal. The evolution had to be this way because of the influence of certain early members that were pulling the sound of the band into a musical lane that was not the initial idea. Nonetheless, after the latest band member changes, this current line-up is focused on making the sound that we have developed on M.T.M.D. This is finally what CHÜZO was meant to sound like after many years and many ex-band members. This mark III version of the band is the final evolution in the sound of CHÜZO.” ~ Cristian S, guitars

An international force with members hailing from Russia, Venezuela, Brazil and Chile who have made Montreal in Canada their home, Chüzo offer three tracks produced by Kevin Jardine (Slaves On Dope) that they describe as “Aggro Metal“. What that means is a blend of Grindcore, Swedish Death and Thrash Metal crossed over into Hardcore Punk with lyrics driven by self-reflection and daily struggles. Good living is the best revenge so audio violence is what should be on the cards…

Don’t be fooled by the 23 second long Art Rock introduction to opening cut “The Brutalator” which feels like it’s been created with an evil grin to lull you in a false sense of security because Chüzo have in what remains of the three and a half minute poison pen letter an ode to early Sepultura. A classic groove laden bass line provides the backbone as vicious screams from vocalist Mischa M offer up the kind of vicious assault on the senses that you won’t ever forget. An ode to Swedish Death Metal “Brand New Cell” has buzzsaw riffs for days against the backdrop of some incredible work on the drum kit. Power, purpose and presence is what make this band the real deal, there is nothing meek and mild about this burnt offering, in anyway shape or form. Its just straight to your face Metal with no looking back. While the band have clearly slowed down since their Grindcore days this unholy trinity are still delivered with pace, the band cutting more from the Death Metal and Metallic Hardcore cloth in their approach to cuts like “Bruised and Broken“. The finale has flavours of Cage Fight about it a brutal blast beat section in the final third adding to the caustic screams of Mischa M and an earworm riff that you’ll struggle to get out of your head once it takes root. It might be something of a cliché but it remains true; this isn’t simply an EP. It’s a promo for helping Chüzo find a major label for a debut full length… [8/10]
