Review: “Dissolved In Misery” by Fall and Resist

As they approach a decade of destruction together, Victoria based Australian Metalcore crew Fall and Resist have given us the gift of EP “Dissolved In Misery“. Uniting current and former members of Maleficium, Emerge, Belligerent Intent and Darker Half to name but a few, the group welcome new guitarist Luke Murnane into the recording suite for the first time, freeing Liam Frost-Camilleri to focus solely on his vocal performances. The outfit is rounded out by guitarist Brendon Pyers, bassist Rory Pyers and drummer Benito Martino, all of whom were part of making their last burnt offering, 2022 EP “Darkness Of Now” a thing of dark beauty.

That previous record found the band expanding their horizons and incorporating elements of Thrash and Post-Metal into their sound while demonstrating their ability to blend aggression with melody in swirling dark moods. That evolution in their sound continues here with the glorious piano introduction to “Living the Lie” which then bursts into flames with the fierce and emotive vocals from Camilleri. The band create a Melodic Death Metal soundscape with beautifully melancholic lead guitars, leaning on Scandinavian influences with this piece of cryptic writing. A spoken word passage before yet more aching piano makes this one a truly special piece and Camilleri cathartically escapes his pain. Groove laden riffs then usher in “Moments of Clarity” in blood and thunder fashion, the dirge filled chugs overlayed once more by some impressive leads before a couple of chunky rhymical passages. The Post-Metal influences come home to roost with some eerie synths in the mid section before a further descent into madness as the band return to the swirling sinister riffage that opened the arteries of the track in the first place.

Vocal layering gives the adrenaline fuelled “Cogs in the Machine” another dimension, allowing dark whispers to underpin the brutal roars and by the end of the track Camilleri sounds like he’s beginning to lose his mind. Sonically this one is faster and harder, offering more dark energy which seems to draw out a more emotive vocal performance. The drums sound thunderous and with the tempo shifts so well executed it all comes together to make for a standout tune to help you breathe more easily. A sombre introduction to “The Destruction (The Resurrection)” draws from the poison well of those Scandinavian influences once more for a punishing and yet melancholic thunderbolt of a track. The sonic power the band create has been mastered and this one has at its black beating heart a couple of really nice rise and fall moments as they experiment with melody and allow their music to do the talking with longer instrumental passages. When in hell, fall and resist before you dissolve in misery [7.5/10]
