Review: “Here Comes The Void” by Buried Souls
Sitting cross legged in the center of the Bermuda Triangle between Hardcore, Death and Sludge Metal are Lausanne Switzerland based duo Buried Souls. Influenced by Black Metal they have been delivering aggressive, cold and relentlessly mechanical sonic abrasions since 2010, submitting two albums and three extended plays in evidence to the court. Their last audio confession was 2024’s “Black Water“, an affair that combines visceral horror themes with inhuman vocals and weighty crushing riffs. The duo have been remarkably consistent in their cryptic writings throughout their career and so when they describe “Here Comes The Void” as a hellish ride, we expect nothing less…
The toxic holocaust begins with the ferocious “Burn The Roots” as dry raspy vocals tear through the lyric sheet with vim and vigor, switching it up for some deeper death growls as the percussive battery pummels you into submission gloriously. Moving away from Sludge fueled tones, this one is a powerhouse of distinctive Death Metal with an earworm main riff delivered with the force of a nail bomb in a way which is reminiscent of bands like Entombed. There is a little more Metallic Hardcore punch to “Here Comes The Void” which is of course another savage assault on the senses with a hummable earworm riff that is as addictive as the latest designer drug. Once it gets inside your head there is simply no escape, the only issue being that each track leaves you wanting more and salivating for the next course. There are a couple of points that flirt with the Noise Metal of bands like Will Haven which is a nice touch and while on paper at least it appears the band remain a duo, a drummer of flesh and bone is definitely behind the kit. Enter the swirling blackness of “Spread The Gloom“, a cut with an introduction so ominous that it will make you pause for thought before diving headlong into the circle pit. The vocals on this one are as monstrous as the jackhammer footwork, the band driving forward with malicious intent and fervent energy. Let’s be honest, this unholy trinity of cuts doesn’t feel like an EP intended for general release but as three cut from an album to send to labels in a bid to get Buried Souls signed on the dotted line [8/10]
