Review: “Una vida de locxs” by Tiempos De Ira

After more than a decade on the Spanish Hardcore scene Art Gates Records signings Tiempos De Ira have returned with EP “Una vida de locxs” (or “A Crazy Life“) as they bid to prove once more that they have what it takes to cross the great divide and play shows with their compatriots stateside. Formed in 2012, the band were born in Ciudad Real and are known for fusing together the clenched fist of Hardcore with the speed of Punk and the aggression of Metal while having a message of resilience, defiance and the will to fight no matter the odds…

A combination of Metallic Hardcore and Hardcore Punk “Quebrando mi voz” (or “Breaking My Voice“) brings the boys to the yard with an air of familiarity as the sound of Tiempos De Ira is very much one that has roots in the New York Hardcore scene. A melody here, a breakdown there, gang chants, venomous verses and sung choruses all come together to great effect, the band choosing their native tongue over English and rightly so. You don’t have to speak Spanish to hear the passion in their voices and perhaps that’s part of the fun of listening to it as someone who doesn’t speak the language. There are fresh ideas here as well with title track “Una vida de locxs” (or “A Crazy Life“) having a staccato riff breaks and rap screams that you know are going to set off a mosh pit or two live. The main riff is fearfully addictive, getting inside your head like a (hed)p.e. jam that simply won’t leave until you give it another spin. Members of Spanish antifascist street punk band Kaos Urbano join the party for “Las Calles Tienen Memoria” (or “The Streets have Memory“) and you may find yourself transported back to “For Those Who Have Heart” by A Day To Remember with the tunes distinctive riffs and driving gallop. The leads have early 2003 era Metalcore vibes about them, perhaps showing more of this bands roots and the gang chanted chorus works incredibly well.

A shade heavier “De mil maneras” (or “In a Thousand Ways“) has pummelling drums and slick riffs a plenty with the screamed vocals very much on point. Again it has the instant appeal of a lottery winning scratch card, the air of familiarity about it drawing you in like a false sense of security. Think bands like Lionheart or Deez Nuts and its very much of a similar vein, making Tiempos De Ira the kind of band who are destined to play the likes of Summer Breeze Festival in Germany. “Somos la rabia” (or “We are the Rage“) continues the flow nicely, the band roaring through the lyric sheet with vim and vigour, once again providing that it doesn’t have to be complicated to be good clean fun and that’s part of the power of Hardcore. Final cut “Nada que demostrar” (or “Nothing to Prove“) brings back some of the Hardcore Punk sound with a little more melody in the guitars and some almost tribal drum patterns. The false ending into rap screams works really well, the energy of the piece making it an unstoppable force [7/10]
