Review: “Chaos Etiquette Vol. 1” by Interpreter
Back in 2022 the world looked very much like it was the Oyster of Nashville, Tennessee Deathcore quarter Interpreter. A year earlier they’d hit a home run with EP “Dirtmound” which had opened doors for the band to open for the likes of While She Sleeps and Enterprise Earth. Then suddenly drummer Aaron Hugen exited stage left and after those shows had taken place, while there were occasional noises from vocalist Wade Turner, guitarist Ryan Waldron and bassist Jeremy “Jay” Arvin, there was nothing concrete. 1322 days after that Enterprise Earth show on 7th August 2022 came the announcement of the first EP in a three part series. That was 21st March 2026 with a release date of 1st April on the tombstone and it turns out it wasn’t an April fools joke. “Chaos Etiquette: Volume l” does actually exist…
As we all know, longer more descriptive song titles were at their peak somewhere between 2003 and 2005 and so Interpreter have decided it’s time they came back around, putting them to good use here. A dark, atmospheric, sample laden introduction laced with programming ushers in the savage “Real Dawgs Only Bark Once“, a gargantuan track of epic proportions that brings to mind Chelsea Grin or Signs Of The Swarm with its brutal DJent fuelled Deathcore chug and pummelling thunderous drums. On first listen there is nothing to suggest the drums are programmed either with no flat cymbal hits or overly ridiculous jackhammer footwork to give that impression. Instead, the opening cut sounds like something cut from a horror movie with Turner’s vicious vocals enough to make the blood run cold. That flows straight into “If You Can Dodge A Wrench, You Can Dodge A Ball“, an equally short, sharp shock of a track that feels like 10,000 volts from an electric fence. Turner reaches into the void of Slam to take his vocals to another level and as spine juddering as the guitars are, it’s the contents of his warped mind spilling out that capture the imagination.
Eerie, haunting programming is interwoven into the fabric of “Do Not Feed The Intruder“, a track in which the main riff feels like a repeating breakdown, the swagger of its groove undeniable. Turner continues to spit blood and venom with another vicious tirade but this time there are tapping sections of guitar work that are pure unadulterated evil and make all the difference. A cinematic introduction to “Fight At A Funeral, Fuck Up A Wedding” helps create an eerie sense of tension before the brutality unfolds with yet more in the way of spine juddering riffage and throat shredding vocals. The bands ability to complete seamless tempo shifts makes this one sound incredible, the dissonant moment spellbinding before the downtempo finale that absolutely annihilates. They say that death is only the beginning… [8/10]
