Review: “Veil Of Revelations” by Worship The Sacrifice

Let’s start with a simple question. Where do you see yourself in the next five years? If you’d asked London “Melo-Chaotic Death Metal” act Worship The Sacrifice that question in 2021 we very much doubt they would have said they would have played over a hundred shows opening for everyone from Distant to Harbinger and Osiah. Furthermore we doubt they would have said they’d have completed an unholy trinity of EPs, a demo and a fistful of singles… but sometimes the truth is stranger than fiction. Their latest burnt offering is “Veil Of Revelations“, a six track affair produced, mixed and mastered by Dan (Lilyhammer, SymbyoteSoma, Dark Shift) at Hellwood Records.

While not a concept record in the conventional sense with this record the five piece confront illusion, manipulation and spiritual blindness, pushing themes of perception, awakening and self-evolution. The journey begins with “Evolve“, a blood and thunder Blackened Death Metal cut with bursts of blast beats, dark oppressive atmospheres and an ocean of sinister riffs. Vocalist Ian “Lazerus” Harris is a beast from the black depths, his savage performance setting the tone for the rest of the band, the vibrant solo a shaft of light through the black clouds.

The emergence of some Death Thrash riffs from Gus Kim and Steve Sharp give “Crystal” a bit of groove laden swagger, the lyrical narrative giving the track the air of an occult ritual as the war drums pound. That’s something enhanced by the cleaner vocal moments which have something of Ozzy Osbourne about them, allowing the mind to wander to thoughts of witches gathering in their masses. Instrumental “Behind The Veil” then offers up some Traditional Heavy Metal with sumptuous leads over acoustic guitars to create an interlude from moments that wouldn’t have worked anywhere else on the record.

Returning to their heavier sounds “Indigo Eyes” then hits hard, a crushing angry anthem which explores the space between revelation and ruin with serious intensity. Sinister leads add flavour to menacing rhythms, the five piece somehow managing to create a tune that has the air of a Technical Deathcore cut with the prowess of a Death Metal one.

Taking on a classic can be a risky manoeuvre but for their rendition of “Nemesis” by Arch Enemy it’s almost as if Worship The Sacrifice have gone full on The Black Dahlia Murder. It almost goes without saying that the vocals are savage but in truth the whole tune is a brutal assault on the senses, taking elements of the original and chemically enhancing them so you get more weight and gravity in the flamboyant Melodic Death Metal leads and darkness in the pulsating rhythms. The impressive thing is that in the context of the record as a whole, the cover doesn’t stand out like a hammer smashed thumb and in point of fact if you didn’t know it was a cover it would sneak in under the radar quite happily. That’s testament to how good the rest of the material on here is.

Another groove laden Melodic Death Metal masterclass “Show Them The Light” is whirlwind of percussive battery and razor sharp riffs, the choral moments that rear their ugly head in the final third evidence that the band aren’t afraid to have a little fun. The soloing that follows is opulent to say the least, the bowel clenching lows of the vocals enough to disturb and unsettle. As a record there is an ocean of quality in terms of musicianship and song writing on this one with distinctive growth from last years “Prophecy Of Demise” [7.5/10]
