Review: “The Blissful Sleep Of Ignorance” by Blüdwyrm

They say that to assume is to make an ass out of you and me but all is forgiven if you get caught in the trap of thinking that the presence umlaut over the u of Blüdwyrm makes them a German band. In point of fact, having risen from the primordial ooze of Dorset England in 2025, the trio have been making a name for themselves by smashing the atoms of soul stirring Doom and feral Sludge Metal together. They’ve done so by sharing stages with the likes of Witchsorrow, Viking Skull and Bile Caster while building momentum towards a debut EP in “The Blissful Sleep Of Ignorance” which promises to make your ears bleed, in the best possible way.

Bassist and vocalist Leo Butterworth, guitarist Alex Jones and drummer Seb Olds introduce themselves with “Preacher of My Own Demise“, a snarled vocal buried within a hypnotic Stoner Sludge riff that is so primal it will have you dragging your knuckles. Hints of inspiration from the likes of Weedeater and Conan rise from the black depths, the introspective lyrical narrative matched by the harsh vocal performance. Black smoke continues to swirl as the cavernous sounds of “Isolate” emerge, the cut an abrasive slow crawl to the grave of self immolation. Sonically there is the air of a demo about the record as if it was recorded in a damp, dark basement dwelling that doubles as a rehearsal space. That gives it a certain charm, the oppressive, claustrophobic intensity of the sounds mirroring the space perfectly.

Lower and slower “The Vultures” feels like being dragged kicking and screaming into a black hole, the crushing weight of the sonic abrasions elevated by some surprisingly vibrant lead guitar work in the final moments. It’s as if the anti-depressants finally kicked in for a fleeting moment and the gloom lifted for a few seconds, the trio having a little Motorhead inspired fun. Returning to the corrosive agony that is their world “Pesticides” is sonic behemoth, a beast of a tune that roars as if impaled, defiant and yet suffering. Little moments of nuance and intricacy lay just beneath the surface, the drum fills that threaten to break into Jazz, bass rumblings that carry a weighty groove are all present before the wall of feedback. A cathartic collection of tunes that offer warmth and sustenance in the hour of need, these will help you survive against all odds [7.5/10]
